Chapter 15 - The Syndicate's Envoy

Two days later, I was sitting at the sleek glass desk in my newly established digital marketing agency. The FBI had completely secured the hardware wallet, but the cartel's dangerous deadline was rapidly approaching. The glass door of my office chimed softly, and a stunning, impeccably dressed woman walked in. She wore a tailored crimson suit, expensive diamond earrings, and carried an aura of absolute, terrifying authority. She did not look like a ruthless cartel enforcer. She looked like a wealthy Wall Street CEO. "Elena," the woman said smoothly, sitting in the plush chair across from my desk without being invited. "My name is Valeria. I believe you possess something that rightfully belongs to my private organization." I kept my posture perfectly straight, refusing to let her see my racing pulse. Agent Vance had heavily bugged my office, and I knew a federal sniper team was watching from the adjacent building. "I assume you are referring to Julian's stolen cryptocurrency," I replied calmly, matching her icy tone. Valeria smiled, but her dark eyes remained completely dead and unforgiving. "Your ex-husband was a foolish, greedy little boy who played with fire," Valeria noted elegantly. "But you, Elena, seem like a very intelligent businesswoman." "I want the ten million dollars transferred to our master ledger by midnight tonight." "And if I refuse?" I challenged boldly. Valeria reached into her expensive designer handbag and pulled out a high-resolution photograph. She slid it slowly across my glass desk. It was a picture of Agent Vance, secretly photographed while he was walking into his private apartment building. "If you refuse, I will have my men murder the handsome federal agent protecting you," Valeria threatened softly. "Then, I will personally burn this beautiful new business of yours to the ground with you inside it." She stood up gracefully, smoothing out the invisible wrinkles in her crimson suit. "Midnight, Elena. Do not make me ruin your lovely new life." As she walked confidently out of my office, Vance burst through the back door, his face pale with suppressed rage. "Did you hear all of that?" I asked, my hands finally beginning to shake. "Every single word," Vance growled, staring at his own surveillance photo on my desk. "Valeria just made the biggest mistake of her life by threatening the people I care about."
