Chapter 18 - The Penthouse Brawl

Vance aggressively grabbed the heavy mahogany chair in front of him and hurled it violently at the closest bodyguard. The massive man crashed heavily into the glass coffee table, shattering it into thousands of dangerous, glittering pieces. I ducked instantly, sliding desperately behind Valeria’s massive wooden desk as deafening gunshots erupted in the small room. Vance drew his concealed federal weapon and fired three rapid, precise shots, neutralizing two of the armed guards instantly. The terrified tech expert scrambled desperately for the door, entirely abandoning his laptop on the desk. Valeria pulled a small, silver pistol from her designer handbag and aimed it frantically at Vance's exposed back. Without thinking, I grabbed a heavy bronze statue from the desk and swung it viciously upward. The heavy metal struck Valeria’s wrist with a sickening crunch. She shrieked in agonizing pain, dropping the silver pistol onto the plush carpet. "The transfer is paused!" Vance shouted over the chaotic noise, violently subduing the last massive bodyguard. "Valeria’s network detected the trojan and halted the transaction at ninety-nine percent!" I scrambled desperately over to the abandoned laptop, staring frantically at the blinking red warning screen. The cartel’s firewall was actively fighting the FBI trojan, trying to forcefully sever the dangerous connection. "Hit the manual override command!" Vance yelled, wrestling aggressively with a guard twice his size. Valeria kicked me brutally in the ribs, sending me tumbling painfully across the floor. "You arrogant little bitch, I will end you!" Valeria hissed, reaching desperately for the fallen gun. I completely ignored the sharp, burning pain in my chest. I lunged forward, desperately kicking the pistol under the heavy couch before she could reach it. I scrambled back to the glowing laptop, my bloody fingers flying across the foreign keyboard. I slammed the "Enter" key with all my remaining strength. The screen flashed a brilliant, blinding green. "Transfer Complete. Data Packet Retrieved," the automated system announced cheerfully. The FBI now possessed the cartel’s entire, highly classified global network.
