Chapter 6 - The Darkness

Total darkness consumed the upstairs bedroom, followed by a heavy, deafening silence.
The sudden, unexpected blackout caused the armed intruders to completely lose their tactical advantage in the unfamiliar space.
"Nobody move," the lead thug shouted blindly into the terrifying void.
I absolutely did not listen to his dangerous command.
Having lived as a caregiver in this exact house for three years, I knew every single floorboard and doorway perfectly by heart.
I silently slipped out of the bedroom and moved rapidly down the dark hallway without making a sound.
Behind me, I heard the frantic, aggressive sounds of the intruders fumbling to activate the flashlights on their rifles.
Chloe screamed in sudden panic as one of the blind men accidentally bumped into her in the dark.
I reached the top of the wooden staircase just as a narrow, blinding beam of light pierced the hallway behind me.
I descended the steep steps two at a time, moving with absolute, terrifying precision.
When I reached the living room, Agent Vance was completely gone from the spot where he had originally fallen.
A fresh, wet trail of blood led directly toward the modern kitchen.
I followed the dark crimson drops, finding Agent Vance leaning heavily against the kitchen island for support.
He was clutching his bleeding shoulder tightly, but his federal service pistol was finally back in his hand.
"I crawled over and cut the main breaker," he whispered agonizingly as I quickly approached him.
"We need to get out through the back door right now before they come downstairs."
I shook my head firmly, entirely refusing to abandon the beautiful home I had sacrificed everything for.
"We are not leaving this house to those absolute monsters," I whispered back fiercely.
"Julian brought this deadly nightmare to my doorstep, and it completely ends tonight."
Agent Vance grimaced terribly as another sharp wave of pain washed over his injured body.
"You are a civilian, Elena," he warned me strictly.
"You cannot successfully fight three heavily armed cartel enforcers with zero training."
I reached slowly into the knife block on the counter and pulled out a large, heavy butcher knife.
"I am a woman who spent three years surviving absolute hell," I corrected him darkly.
Heavy, synchronized military footsteps began echoing loudly from the wooden staircase in the other room.
The bright tactical flashlights violently swept across the living room walls like prison searchlights.
I grabbed Agent Vance's uninjured arm and pulled him safely behind the large stainless steel refrigerator.

"They are coming into the kitchen," Agent Vance whispered tightly, raising his weapon.
Suddenly, an agonizing, blood-curdling scream echoed from the upstairs bedroom, but it definitely belonged to a woman.
