Chapter 13 - The Midnight Intruder

I returned to my quiet house in Queens late that evening, the heavy weight of Julian's cryptic words pressing firmly against my mind. Only Chloe knew what to look for. What could Julian possibly have entrusted to his shallow, money-hungry mistress? I locked the doors, armed the professional security system, and went upstairs to try and get some sleep. Around two in the morning, a sudden, sharp crashing sound from the downstairs kitchen jolted me awake. My heart slammed against my ribs. I quietly slipped out of bed, reached into my nightstand, and pulled out the heavy taser Vance had legally procured for me. I crept silently down the wooden staircase, the darkness of the house feeling terrifyingly familiar. A small, frantic beam from a flashlight was darting erratically across the living room floor. Someone was violently tearing through Eleanor's old storage boxes stacked near the fireplace. I stepped quickly into the archway, flipped on the harsh overhead lights, and aimed my weapon directly at the intruder. "Don't move a single muscle!" I shouted aggressively. The intruder screamed in sheer terror and dropped the flashlight onto the hardwood floor. It was Chloe. She looked absolutely horrific, a mere shadow of the glamorous woman she had desperately tried to be. Her expensive clothes were torn, her blonde hair was a matted mess, and she was shaking violently. "Elena, please, don't hurt me!" Chloe sobbed hysterically, holding her hands up in total surrender. "What the hell are you doing in my house, Chloe?" I demanded, not lowering my weapon for a second. "They found me," she cried miserably, collapsing onto her knees. "The cartel found my cheap motel. They told me if I didn't bring them Julian's money by tomorrow, they would legally terminate my parental rights and take my baby from foster care permanently." A cold wave of realization washed over me. Julian hadn't just used me as a shield; he had used his own infant child as collateral. "What are you looking for, Chloe?" I asked, my voice softening just a fraction. "Julian gave me something the night we arrived at the airport," she confessed, tears streaming down her bruised face. "He sewed a tiny metal object inside my baby's favorite stuffed blue elephant." I stared at her in absolute shock. "When the shootout happened in this living room, I dropped the toy," Chloe whispered, completely devastated. "The flash drive is still somewhere inside this house."
