Chapter 14 - The Digital Skeleton Key

I immediately lowered my weapon and helped a weeping Chloe off the cold hardwood floor. I walked purposefully over to the deep hallway closet where I had stored all the random items left behind after the terrifying shootout. I pulled out a large cardboard box labeled "Miscellaneous" and dumped its contents onto the expensive living room rug. Right in the center of the pile sat a small, dusty blue plush elephant. Chloe gasped and desperately reached for it, but I snatched it away instantly. "You are not giving this to the cartel, Chloe," I stated firmly. "If you hand this over, they will kill you anyway to tie up loose ends." I marched into the kitchen, grabbed a sharp paring knife, and carefully sliced open the back of the stuffed animal. Buried deep inside the soft white cotton stuffing was a sleek, black encrypted hardware wallet. I immediately called Agent Vance, who arrived with a trusted FBI cyber-analyst before the sun even began to rise. We sat around my kitchen island as the analyst carefully plugged the encrypted drive into a secure federal laptop. "It is a military-grade encryption," the analyst warned us, his fingers flying rapidly across the keyboard. "We have exactly three attempts to enter the correct password, or the drive will permanently format itself and the ten million dollars will literally vanish into the digital ether." Vance looked at me with a deep, concerned frown. "Julian is a massive narcissist," Vance muttered. "He would use a password that makes him feel incredibly powerful." I stared at the blinking cursor on the laptop screen, thinking deeply about the man who had tormented me for years. Julian was cruel, incredibly petty, and obsessed with the wealth his mother had legally denied him. "Try the exact date of Eleanor's death," I suggested quietly, feeling a sickening pit in my stomach. "He always saw her passing as his ultimate payday." The analyst typed the sequence of numbers into the prompt and hit enter. The laptop screen flashed green, and a massive offshore cryptocurrency ledger appeared instantly. Ten million dollars in stolen cartel funds sat perfectly intact on the screen. Chloe let out a loud, breathless sob of pure relief. "We have it," Vance said, a predatory smile forming on his face. "Now, we don't just wait for the syndicate to hunt you down, Elena. We use this money to bait them into a federal trap."
