Chapter 10 - The New Dawn

Julian furiously resisted the tactical officers as they aggressively forced him flat onto the bedroom floor.
He screamed loudly that he was completely innocent, foolishly blaming the entire massive criminal conspiracy on his deceased mother.
The lead federal detective completely ignored his pathetic lies and formally read him his strict Miranda rights.
I stood very quietly in the bright hallway, watching the man I once loved completely and utterly unravel.
Julian suddenly stopped fighting the heavy restraints and stared directly into my eyes with pure, unadulterated venom.
"You set me up entirely, Elena," he snarled viciously as the heavy steel handcuffs finally clicked shut.
"I will make absolutely sure my expensive lawyers take every single penny of that inheritance away from you."
Agent Vance, sitting heavily on a professional paramedic's stretcher, let out a weak but incredibly genuine laugh.
"Your offshore assets have already been permanently frozen by the federal government, Julian," Agent Vance informed him happily.
"You have absolutely nothing left to your name."
The officers aggressively dragged a violently thrashing Julian out the front door and shoved him securely into a police cruiser.
Chloe sobbed uncontrollably on the front porch as professional child protective services arrived to temporarily take custody of her baby.
Her reckless, shallow dreams of happily living a luxurious lifestyle were permanently destroyed by her own massive greed.
Six peaceful months later, the quiet two-story house in Queens was fully restored and deeply beautiful.
I had officially launched my own highly successful digital marketing and design agency from the renovated living room.
The incredibly profitable business thrived entirely, completely funded by the clean, legal inheritance Eleanor had securely left me.
Julian had finally pleaded totally guilty to federal fraud and was sentenced heavily to twenty years in maximum security.
I finally possessed the total freedom, abundant wealth, and deep happiness I had always truly deserved.
I poured a fresh, hot cup of warm coffee and placed it gently on Eleanor's immaculate, loving memorial altar.
I smiled brightly at her framed photograph, knowing deeply she would be incredibly proud of the strong woman I had become.
The dark, exhausting nightmare that had terribly consumed my life was finally and permanently over.
I took a deep, refreshing breath of clean air and walked happily toward the front hallway.
But as I confidently turned the corner, a heavy, ominous knock echoed incredibly loudly from the front door.
I cautiously opened it to find a blank, unmarked envelope sitting silently on the welcome mat.

Inside was a single, perfectly preserved black lily and a neatly handwritten note.
It simply read: "Julian was just the middleman, and you still have our money."
