Chapter 2 - The Stranger

Julian froze instantly, his hands suspended just inches from my neck.
He slowly turned his head toward the wooden staircase, his eyes wide with genuine panic.
A tall man in a dark trench coat descended the steps, keeping a sleek black firearm pointed directly at Julian's chest.
Chloe screamed in terror and instinctively backed away toward the locked front door.
The baby began to cry loudly, adding to the chaotic tension rapidly filling the living room.
"Who the hell are you?" Julian demanded, trying to sound authoritative despite his shaking voice.
The man reached the bottom of the stairs and casually flipped open a leather badge wallet.
"Special Agent Thomas Vance, Federal Bureau of Investigation," the man announced calmly.
Julian gasped, taking a stumbling step backward as the color drained from his face entirely.
"Vance?" Julian repeated, his voice cracking slightly.
"That is my last name," Julian stammered in absolute confusion.
Agent Vance offered a cold, unforgiving smile that did not reach his eyes.
"Yes, it is," Agent Vance replied smoothly as he stepped into the light.
"I am your older half-brother, the one your father kept a secret from your mother for twenty years."
Julian looked like he was about to faint from the sheer weight of the sudden revelation.
I watched the dramatic scene unfold with quiet satisfaction, knowing exactly why Agent Vance was here.
Eleanor had spent her final, painful months tracking down the truth about her late husband's hidden past.
She had found Thomas and invited him into our home to help expose Julian's endless web of lies.
"You have no jurisdiction here," Julian argued desperately, wiping sweat from his forehead.
"This is a private family dispute over my mother's estate."
Agent Vance pocketed his badge but kept his federal weapon drawn and steady.
"I am not here for the estate, little brother," Agent Vance said coldly.
"I am here because the Canadian shell company you used to funnel your corporate funds is directly tied to an international crime syndicate."
Chloe gasped, staring at Julian with eyes full of absolute terror and betrayal.
"Julian, what is he talking about?" Chloe demanded frantically.
"You told me you were a legitimate software investor."
Julian ignored her completely, his calculating mind racing to find an immediate exit strategy.
He slowly raised his hands in a fake gesture of total surrender.
"You have no proof of anything," Julian sneered arrogantly.
Agent Vance chuckled softly, shaking his head at his brother's foolishness.
"We didn't have proof, until your lovely wife Elena sent us all of your encrypted files an hour ago," Agent Vance revealed.
Julian whipped his head around to glare at me with pure, unadulterated murderous intent.

Suddenly, the front door burst open with a deafening crash that shook the walls.
Three heavily armed men wearing black ski masks violently stormed into the hallway.
