Chapter 8 - The Financial Trap

The mercenary's laser sight painted a bright red dot directly between my shoulder blades.
He commanded me to slowly drop the weapon and hand over the incredibly valuable flash drive.
Grant laughed through his agonizing pain, mocking me for thinking I could ever actually beat him.
I slowly raised my hands, pretending to completely surrender to the terrifying man behind me.
As I turned around, I deliberately tossed the small silver flash drive directly over the railing into the dark abyss of the warehouse.
The mercenary gasped in pure shock, instinctively leaning over the heavy railing to track the falling object.
In that precious split second, David appeared from the lower stairwell and accurately shot the mercenary in the shoulder.
The massive man collapsed backward, dropping his heavy shotgun loudly onto the metal grating.
I quickly kicked the weapon far out of reach and helped David secure the injured attacker with heavy zip ties.
Grant was crawling pathetically toward the roof door, desperately trying to escape into the raging thunderstorm.
David dragged him back inside by his expensive collar, slamming him fiercely against the cinderblock wall.
I coldly looked down at my incredibly pathetic, cowardly husband and told him the game was officially over.
Grant spat blood onto the floor and revealed his ultimate, devastating fail-safe plan.
He maliciously confessed that the flash drive I threw away was entirely a fake decoy.
He had actually swallowed a micro-SD card containing the real crypto keys before the police ever arrived at the lake house.
The fifty million dollars was already completely transferred into an untraceable account that only he could access.
He proudly declared that if he went to federal prison, the money would permanently disappear, leaving me with the massive cartel debt.
David and I shared a completely silent, calculated look of mutual understanding.

I smiled warmly at Grant, reached into my dark coat pocket, and pulled out my vibrating cell phone.
I showed Grant the glowing screen, which displayed a fully completed digital wire transfer receipt for fifty million dollars.
