Chapter 15 - The Vertical Fortress

We left the glamorous gala just before midnight, trading our expensive evening wear for entirely black, specialized tactical gear.

The Obsidian tower loomed in the center of the financial district like a massive, dark monolith against the stormy night sky. Because the building was still technically under construction, the lower levels were wrapped in heavy scaffolding, and the surrounding streets were entirely deserted.

David used his military expertise to quietly bypass the perimeter fencing, completely avoiding the high-definition thermal security cameras sweeping the grounds. We moved like absolute ghosts through the shadows, slipping through a temporary service door into the massive, echoing concrete lobby.

I pulled out the cloned digital access card and swiped it across the heavily reinforced security elevator dedicated to the executive construction crew. The keypad flashed a brilliant green, and the heavy metal doors silently slid open.

I hacked the elevator's internal control panel, manually overriding the floor destination. We bypassed the standard penthouse button and inputted the sequence for the hidden forty-second floor.

The elevator ascended rapidly, the sheer speed making my stomach drop. When the doors finally hissed open, we stepped out into a completely different world.

The hidden floor was not a dusty construction zone. It was a fully operational, climate-controlled digital fortress. Rows of massive, glowing servers lined the walls, processing billions of dollars in illegal transactions every single second. At the far end of the room sat a massive steel vault, undoubtedly holding the cartel's physical cash and emergency reserves.

David immediately swept the room with his suppressed weapon, securing the area. It was entirely empty; Vargas's men heavily guarded the perimeter below, foolishly believing the hidden floor was completely inaccessible without the boss's personal key.

I sprinted toward the main server terminal, pulled a heavy military-grade decryption drive from my tactical vest, and plugged it directly into the cartel’s mainframe.

My laptop screen violently illuminated as millions of encrypted files began rapidly downloading. I was pulling the entire transaction history of the Obsidian Syndicate—every politician they had bribed, every offshore account they controlled, and the exact identities of the supreme cartel leaders Vargas reported to.

"Seventy percent complete," I whispered urgently, my fingers flying rapidly across the illuminated keyboard to bypass a secondary firewall.

Suddenly, the heavy metal doors of the security elevator dinged loudly in the quiet room.

David instantly raised his weapon, aiming directly at the sliding doors.

The doors opened, revealing Vargas's heavily armed head of security and three massive cartel enforcers. They had noticed the unauthorized elevator movement on their ground-floor monitors.

Without a single moment of hesitation, the enforcers raised their automatic weapons, and the quiet, sterile room erupted into absolute, deafening violence.
