Chapter 18 - The Architect's Wrath

The massive industrial crane control console sparked violently as I successfully bypassed the heavy safety overrides. I grasped the heavy steel levers, my hands completely steady despite the terrifying chaos unfolding below us.

Through the massive, uninstalled window frames of the twenty-second floor, I had a perfect view of the exterior heavy-lift crane attached to the side of the skyscraper. Suspended from the crane's massive steel cables, directly hovering over the ground-floor security perimeter, was a terrifying payload: ten tons of solid steel I-beams bound tightly together, waiting to be installed the next morning.

I pushed the heavy control lever completely forward.

The massive diesel engine of the crane roared to life with a deafening, thunderous mechanical scream. The cartel mercenaries on the ground floor instantly stopped their tactical sweep and looked up in pure, paralyzing horror.

I aggressively released the electromagnetic safety brake holding the payload in the air.

The ten tons of solid steel I-beams entered absolute freefall, dropping hundreds of feet through the dark, stormy sky. The payload crashed violently into the center of the cartel's heavy armored vehicles blocking the main exit.

The sheer kinetic impact was absolutely devastating. The deafening crash echoed across the entire financial district like a massive bomb detonating. The armored vans were entirely crushed flat, the heavy steel beams completely destroying Vargas's defensive perimeter and sending his terrified mercenaries sprinting blindly for their lives.

The violent shockwave shattered the glass of the surrounding buildings and triggered every single car alarm within a three-mile radius.

"The entire police force in the city is going to respond to that noise," David shouted triumphantly, watching the absolute chaos unfold below.

Vargas's carefully maintained, secretive operation was now a massive, highly visible disaster zone.

I didn't stop there. I rapidly typed a command into my secure laptop, executing an automated script I had prepared. I sent the entire encrypted ledger of the Obsidian Syndicate—every bribe, every murder, and every hidden offshore account—directly to the secure servers of the FBI, the DEA, and the IRS simultaneously.

For good measure, I also anonymously forwarded the ledger to the leaders of the rival cartel syndicates, entirely exposing Vargas's massive vulnerability to his deadliest enemies.

"We need to move, now!" David commanded, grabbing my hand as the distant, blaring wail of dozens of police sirens began to echo through the rainy city streets.

We completely bypassed the chaotic, ruined lobby by using a secondary construction scaffolding staircase on the blind side of the building. We slipped seamlessly into the dark alleyways, completely vanishing into the stormy night just as massive waves of heavily armed police tactical units swarmed the Obsidian tower, trapping Vargas and his men inside the absolute ruins of his own empire.
