Chapter 12 - The Federal Cell

The maximum-security federal penitentiary was a bleak, terrifying fortress of gray concrete and razor wire, a stark contrast to the luxurious life Grant had always demanded.

I sat in the sterile, heavily monitored visitation room, my hands folded neatly on the cold metal table. I was dressed in a razor-sharp, tailored black designer suit, projecting absolute, untouchable power. David stood waiting outside in the armored SUV, keeping a vigilant watch on the perimeter.

The heavy steel door buzzed loudly, and two armed guards escorted Grant into the room. He was wearing a faded, oversized orange jumpsuit. He looked exhausted, his hair unkempt and his posture entirely broken.

When he saw me sitting across the glass divider, a cruel, arrogant smirk slowly spread across his bruised face. He picked up the heavy black telephone receiver, entirely confident that I had come crawling to him for help.

I picked up my receiver and stared at him with pure, unadulterated disgust.

Grant laughed, the sound hollow and pathetic through the thick bulletproof glass. He proudly boasted that Vargas had probably contacted me, and that I was finally realizing how incredibly smart he had been to leverage the cartel against me from the inside of a prison cell.

He confidently demanded a completely unreasonable deal. If I legally transferred thirty percent of Whitmore Development into a hidden trust fund for him, he would give me the encrypted account numbers belonging to Vargas's rival syndicates, allowing me to spark a cartel war and escape the debt.

I looked at my cowardly, pathetic ex-husband and smiled a brilliantly cold, calculated smile.

I calmly informed him that I was not there to negotiate with a federal inmate. I reached into my designer briefcase and pressed a sleek, magnetic digital recording device directly against the glass.

I played a crystal-clear audio recording of Grant's voice from just minutes ago, proudly confessing that he had actively collaborated with Alejandro Vargas, an international cartel boss, to orchestrate the extortion of a massive American corporation.

Grant's arrogant smile instantly vanished, replaced by a mask of sheer, paralyzing panic.

I quietly explained that I was submitting this recorded confession directly to the FBI task force investigating his case. By actively conducting cartel business from a federal prison telephone, he had just committed major federal treason and racketeering.

His sentence would be immediately upgraded to solitary confinement in a supermax facility for the rest of his natural life. He would never see the sun, speak to another human being, or touch a single dime of any trust fund ever again.

Grant began to violently weep, slamming his handcuffed fists against the thick glass, desperately begging me to delete the recording. He completely fractured under the pressure, instantly sobbing and offering to tell me absolutely everything he knew about Vargas for free.

He frantically revealed that Vargas was not operating from the Cayman Islands. He was actually living right here in our city, using a massive legitimate commercial real estate firm as a front to launder the cartel's billions.

I wrote down the name of Vargas's shell company, hung up the heavy receiver, and walked out of the prison without ever looking back at the screaming, broken man behind the glass.
