Chapter 9 - The Roof Rescue

The sickening thud of Agent Vance hitting the elevator roof echoed loudly through the dark shaft.

Laura did not wait to see if the corrupt federal agent was dead or alive.

She frantically reached into the red electrical box and slammed the heavy emergency override switch upward.

The shaft instantly flooded with bright emergency lighting, and the powerful elevator motors roared back to life.

The metal car lurched upward, accelerating quickly toward the hospital roof.

Laura clung to the catwalk railing, watching the elevator safely pass the floor where the mercenaries were waiting.

She climbed the remaining maintenance ladder to the roof access door and burst out into the cool night air.

The elevator had already arrived at the rooftop penthouse, and Dr. Doyle was pushing Emma’s gurney out into the open.

The sound of approaching police sirens filled the city, growing louder with every passing second.

A massive spotlight suddenly illuminated the rooftop, blinding Laura and the doctor completely.

A heavily armed SWAT helicopter hovered just above the helipad, its side doors wide open.

Real FBI agents, led by a highly decorated regional director, fast-roped down onto the roof.

They immediately secured the perimeter and rushed over to assist Dr. Doyle with Emma's gurney.

The regional director approached Laura, holding up his badge to confirm his true identity.

"We intercepted Agent Vance's encrypted communications an hour ago and mobilized the entire tactical division," the director explained.

"My men are sweeping the hospital right now, and the mercenaries have completely surrendered."

Laura felt a massive wave of exhaustion hit her as the adrenaline finally left her system.

She ran to Emma's side, holding her daughter's hand as the medical flight crew prepared her for an emergency transport to a secure military hospital.

Emma’s eyelids fluttered open for a brief moment, revealing a weak but beautiful smile.

"You saved me, Mom," the brave fourteen-year-old whispered before drifting back to sleep.

Laura kissed her forehead, knowing that the terrifying nightmare was finally coming to an end.

The helicopter lifted off the roof, flying them away from the danger and toward a safe future.
