Chapter 13 - The Breach

The sudden darkness inside the bunker was absolute, broken only by the chaotic shouts of federal agents and the frantic clicking of tactical flashlights being engaged. Red emergency strobe lights began to pulse along the concrete walls, casting eerie, blood-colored shadows across the terrified faces of the personnel.
Director Miller’s voice boomed over the chaos, ordering a complete perimeter lockdown and demanding a status report on the backup generators.
Laura instinctively pulled Emma behind a heavy metal communications desk, shielding her daughter's body with her own. Dr. Doyle crouched down beside them, her medical bag clutched tightly against her chest.
An agent near the control console yelled out that the analog communication lines had been physically severed from the outside. The backup generators were not failing due to a mechanical error; they had been deliberately sabotaged with high-grade thermite charges.
Director Miller cursed under his breath, drawing his sidearm. He realized instantly that the Syndicate had not tracked Laura’s car; they had tracked the armored FBI transport vehicle. The terrifying implication was that the cartel possessed military-grade satellite tracking capabilities, or far worse, they had a mole operating inside Miller's own elite tactical unit.
The heavy steel blast doors at the front of the bunker suddenly emitted a high-pitched mechanical whine. The massive deadbolts were retracting. Someone had bypassed the manual lock from the outside using a specialized electronic deciphering tool.
Miller ordered his men to form a defensive line facing the entrance. He looked back at Laura, pointing toward a small, unmarked steel hatch at the rear of the command center. He told her it was an emergency drainage culvert that led straight out into the dense national forest behind the mountain.
He ordered Dr. Doyle to take Laura and Emma and run as fast and as far as they could into the wilderness. He promised to hold the entrance at all costs.
Laura hesitated, not wanting to leave the man who had saved them to die, but the deafening sound of a breaching charge detonating against the blast doors made the decision for her.
The heavy steel doors blew inward with a concussive shockwave that knocked several agents to the floor. Through the swirling smoke and dust, a team of heavily armed mercenaries dressed in sleek, black tactical gear poured into the bunker.
Gunfire erupted instantly, a deafening exchange of automatic weapons in an enclosed space. The flashes of muzzles illuminated the room like a horrifying strobe light.

Dr. Doyle grabbed Laura’s hand and pulled her toward the rear hatch. Laura shoved Emma through the small opening, climbing in immediately after her. Marissa followed, pulling the heavy steel hatch shut behind them and throwing the internal lock.
They were plunged into a damp, freezing concrete pipe that smelled of stagnant water and moss. The muffled sounds of the brutal gunfight echoed behind them as they began to crawl desperately through the darkness, knowing that if the mercenaries breached the command center, the hunters would soon be on their trail.
