Chapter 18 - The Collapse

The heat inside the burning mill was becoming utterly unbearable. Thick, toxic black smoke billowed from the roof, making it nearly impossible to breathe. The massive wooden support beams above them groaned and cracked violently, threatening to give way at any second.
Laura reached the maintenance cage and desperately wedged the iron crowbar into the jammed locking mechanism. The intense heat had caused the rusted metal to expand, fusing the lock tightly shut.
Emma pushed against the chain-link door from the inside, coughing heavily as the smoke began to fill the small enclosure. Panic finally began to crack the teenager’s brave facade, tears streaming down her soot-covered cheeks.
"Mom, I can't breathe," Emma choked out, sinking to her knees inside the cage.
Laura screamed in sheer frustration, slamming her entire body weight against the heavy iron crowbar. She refused to lose her daughter now, not after surviving the cartel, the corrupt agents, and the elite assassins.
Dr. Doyle stumbled over to the cage, clutching her bleeding shoulder with one hand. She picked up a heavy steel wrench from the floor and began smashing it relentlessly against the jammed lock, adding her failing strength to Laura’s desperate effort.
With a deafening, metallic snap, the rusted locking mechanism finally shattered into pieces.
Laura tore the chain-link door open and dragged Emma out of the cage, pulling her daughter into a fierce, protective embrace.
But their victory was immediately overshadowed by a terrifying, thunderous crack from above. The main central support beam of the mill finally succumbed to the roaring fire, splitting completely in half.
The entire western half of the tin roof began to collapse downward, sending an avalanche of burning timber and jagged metal raining onto the factory floor.
"Run for the loading bay!" Marissa screamed over the roar of the flames.
Laura grabbed Emma’s hand, and the three women sprinted blindly through the smoke-filled maze of rusted machinery. Flaming debris crashed down all around them, singeing their clothes and hair.
They reached the shattered loading bay doors just as the entire back wall of the mill blew outward from a secondary chemical explosion. The concussive force lifted Laura, Emma, and Marissa off their feet, throwing them violently out into the cold, muddy ravine.
They landed hard in the wet grass, rolling away from the intense heat of the blazing inferno.
Laura pushed herself up onto her elbows, coughing up dark soot as she looked back at the massive structure. The abandoned logging mill was now a towering bonfire, completely consuming the bodies of the cartel assassins and erasing all evidence of the brutal battle that had just taken place.
The cold Oregon rain beat down on their faces, washing away the blood, sweat, and ash.
Emma crawled over to Laura, wrapping her arms tightly around her mother’s neck and burying her face in her chest.
For a long moment, the only sound was the crackle of the massive fire and the ragged, exhausted breathing of the three survivors.
Suddenly, the piercing whine of heavy tires tearing through the muddy access road broke the silence. A convoy of three armored tactical vehicles sped into the clearing, their high-beam headlights sweeping across the smoking ruins of the mill.

Laura instinctively reached for the iron crowbar, ready to fight to the bitter end, until she saw the bold white letters emblazoned on the side of the lead vehicle.
It was the FBI.
