Chapter 17 - The Final Stand

The roaring flames of the chemical fire cast dancing, hellish shadows across the interior of the abandoned mill. The intense heat quickly began to dry the damp timber, threatening to turn the entire structure into a blazing inferno within minutes.
Laura climbed down the rusted metal ladder from the catwalk, her eyes fixed entirely on the smoke swirling near the center of the room. She knew the Silencer was not dead. Men like him did not die easily.
Suddenly, a heavy hand grabbed Laura’s ankle through the rungs of the ladder, yanking her violently downward.
Laura screamed as she fell the remaining ten feet, crashing hard onto the concrete floor. The wind was completely knocked out of her lungs, leaving her gasping for air.
The Silencer loomed over her, his Kevlar vest scorched and smoking from the explosion, but his eyes were filled with an unyielding, murderous rage. He drew a massive tactical combat knife from his hip, the jagged steel gleaming in the firelight.
He kicked Laura viciously in the ribs, sending her rolling across the floor toward the massive, rusted blade of an old circular saw.
"You caused a lot of trouble for a dead woman," the Silencer rasped, stalking toward her slowly, savoring the kill.
From the shadows, Dr. Doyle stepped forward, aiming her pistol directly at the assassin’s head. She pulled the trigger, but a hollow click echoed through the room. The weapon was completely empty.
The Silencer laughed cruelly, turning his attention toward the doctor. He lunged at Marissa with terrifying speed, slashing the heavy blade across her shoulder. Marissa cried out in pain, falling backward against a steel beam and clutching her bleeding arm.
Seeing her friend fall ignited a primal, uncontrollable fury deep within Laura’s soul. She refused to watch another person die to protect her family.
Laura grabbed a handful of the thick, abrasive sawdust that coated the floor and hurled it directly into the Silencer’s eyes as he turned back toward her.
The massive assassin roared in agony, blindly swiping the heavy knife through the air.
Laura scrambled to her feet, grabbing the heavy iron chain that suspended the rusted circular saw above them. She used all of her remaining strength to pull the locking pin from the rusty winch.
The massive steel blade, weighing several hundred pounds, plummeted from the ceiling.
It crashed down precisely where the blinded assassin was standing, pinning him heavily beneath the unforgiving iron. The Silencer gasped once, dropping his knife before falling completely still on the concrete floor.
The immediate threat was finally neutralized.
Laura rushed over to Marissa, tearing a piece of her own shirt to create a makeshift tourniquet for the doctor’s bleeding shoulder. Marissa offered a weak but genuinely grateful smile, leaning heavily against the steel beam.
Suddenly, a loud, metallic banging echoed from inside the maintenance cage. Emma was desperately shaking the chain-link fence, pointing wide-eyed toward the blazing inferno spreading rapidly across the wooden roof.

The structural supports of the mill were groaning loudly. The entire building was about to collapse on top of them.
Laura grabbed the heavy crowbar and sprinted toward the cage, determined to free her daughter before the roof caved in.
