Chapter 4 - The Betrayal
The deafening blast of the shotgun left Laura’s ears ringing wildly.
Jason stood in the doorway, his designer suit now covered in white drywall dust.
He pressed the barrel of his weapon against the terrified nurse’s temple.
"Slide the titanium capsule across the floor right now, or she dies," Jason demanded coldly.
Agent Vance kept his pistol aimed squarely at Jason’s chest, refusing to back down.
"You know I cannot do that, Jason," the federal agent replied with a steady voice.
"The cartel is already hunting you for losing the data, so you are a dead man either way."
Jason’s eyes twitched with a mixture of pure rage and absolute desperation.
He threw the crying nurse to the floor and fired a wild shot toward the observation window.
The thick safety glass spider-webbed, showering Laura and Dr. Doyle with sharp fragments.
Agent Vance returned fire immediately, but Jason ducked behind the heavy steel doorframe for cover.
Dr. Doyle grabbed Laura’s arm and pulled her behind a heavy filing cabinet.
Down in the operating room, the surgeon frantically finished stapling Emma’s incision closed.
Laura watched helplessly as the surgical team pushed Emma’s gurney toward the secret sterile supply exit.
"They are getting her out through the basement tunnels," Dr. Doyle whispered to Laura.
Jason must have noticed the movement through the shattered glass window.
He cursed loudly and tossed a small, spherical object into the observation room before running away.
Agent Vance recognized the flashbang grenade instantly and dove onto the floor.
A blinding white light and a massive shockwave incapacitated everyone in the small room.
When Laura finally regained her vision, her head was pounding and the room was completely silent.
She stumbled to her feet, expecting to see Agent Vance calling for backup.
Instead, she found the federal agent lying motionless on the floor with a knife in his back.

The titanium capsule containing the microchip was gone from the surgical basin.
And a bloody footprint showed that Jason was already heading toward the basement to hunt down Emma.
