Chapter 6 - The Lethal Injection

A loud gunshot echoed through the basement, deafening Laura completely.

She squeezed her eyes shut, waiting for the agonizing pain of the bullet to hit her.

But the pain never came.

Laura opened her eyes and saw Jason stumbling backward, clutching his shoulder in shock.

Dr. Doyle had leaped from the shadows and plunged the syringe of heavy sedatives directly into his neck.

Jason roared in anger, swatting the doctor away with a brutal backhand that sent her crashing to the floor.

He tried to raise his gun again, but the massive dose of medication was already entering his bloodstream.

His vision blurred, and his legs completely gave out beneath his weight.

Jason collapsed onto the cold concrete floor, his weapon skittering away into the darkness.

Laura rushed over to help Dr. Doyle to her feet, checking her for any serious injuries.

"That sedative will only keep him down for an hour at most," the doctor warned, wiping blood from her lip.

They quickly used heavy zip ties from the maintenance cart to bind Jason’s hands and feet.

The trauma surgeon coughed violently, pointing a shaking finger toward the old incinerator room.

"Emma is hidden inside there, behind the locked steel doors," he gasped out.

Laura ran to the incinerator room and frantically unlocked the heavy metal latch.

Inside, Emma was lying on the gurney, still unconscious but breathing steadily.

Tears of immense relief streamed down Laura's face as she kissed her daughter's pale forehead.

"We need to get her to a safe house before the rest of the cartel realizes Jason failed," Dr. Doyle stated.

They began rolling the gurney toward the underground parking garage connected to the hospital.

The concrete ramp leading to the exit was steep, forcing them to push with all their strength.

Suddenly, the heavy rolling metal door of the garage began to slowly lower, shutting them inside.

A dark SUV pulled up to the other side of the gate just before it slammed shut.

Five heavily armed men in tactical gear stepped out of the vehicle.

One of the men walked up to the metal grate and smiled directly at Laura.

It was the supposedly dead Agent Vance, holding the titanium capsule and looking very much alive.
