Chapter 16 - The Apex Predator

The heavy tin doors of the loading bay groaned loudly before being kicked completely off their rusted hinges. Four mercenaries entered the mill, their assault rifles raised and sweeping the darkness with blinding tactical flashlights.
Leading the pack was a massive, scarred man wearing a heavy Kevlar vest and night-vision goggles. He moved with a terrifying, predatory grace, entirely different from the clumsy brutality of Jason. This was the Syndicate’s top cleaner, a ghost known in the criminal underworld only as the Silencer.
He raised his fist, silently ordering his men to fan out across the decaying factory floor. The assassins moved cautiously, completely unaware of the lethal environment Laura had constructed in the shadows.
The first mercenary stepped confidently onto the main concrete walkway. His heavy combat boot hit the thick pool of industrial grease Laura had spread earlier. His legs flew out from under him, and he crashed violently backward onto the hard concrete, his assault rifle clattering away into the dark.
Before the fallen man could recover, he accidentally kicked the thin tripwire strung across the floor.
High above him, the tension released. A massive, rusted iron gear weighing over two hundred pounds swung down from the rafters like a pendulum. It struck the mercenary squarely in the chest with a sickening crunch, incapacitating him instantly.
The loud crash echoed through the mill, instantly giving away the mercenaries' positions.
The Silencer cursed fiercely in Spanish, ripping his night-vision goggles off as the swirling dust blinded the lenses. He ordered his remaining two men to fire blindly into the rafters, assuming their prey was hiding above them.
Deafening automatic gunfire shredded the wooden catwalks above, showering the factory floor with massive splinters.
Marissa used the chaotic noise of the gunfire to her advantage. She leaned out from behind the steel pillar and fired two precise, controlled shots from her stolen pistol. The bullets struck the second mercenary directly in the unarmored gap beneath his armpit. The man collapsed silently into the pooling rainwater.
Only the Silencer and one other heavily armed guard remained.
Realizing that they were walking into a highly coordinated ambush, the Silencer ordered his last man to retreat toward the loading bay for cover.
As the guard backed away, his heel bumped against the stack of decaying chemical solvent barrels Laura had arranged.
Laura, hidden in the shadows on the upper catwalk, took a deep breath and struck the emergency flare against the rusted railing. It ignited with a brilliant, blinding red hiss, illuminating her fierce, determined face.
She did not hesitate. Laura dropped the burning flare directly into the pool of volatile chemicals surrounding the barrels below.

The explosion was instantaneous and utterly deafening. A massive fireball erupted in the center of the loading bay, throwing the final guard through the air like a broken ragdoll and completely cutting off the only exit from the mill.
Laura had successfully trapped the apex predator inside the burning cage.
