Chapter 15 - The Rusted Sanctuary

The abandoned logging mill was a terrifying monolith of rusted iron and decaying timber. Massive circular saw blades, dull with decades of oxidation, hung from the ceiling on heavy steel chains. The concrete floor was slick with rainwater leaking through the collapsed tin roof, and the stench of wet rot permeated the freezing air.

Laura, Emma, and Marissa slipped through a broken loading bay door, instantly grateful for the shelter from the biting mountain wind.

Dr. Doyle immediately went to work, using the dim light of her penlight to assess the structure. She found a heavy steel maintenance cage in the center of the mill that had once been used to store valuable mechanical tools. It had only one entrance, a heavy chain-link door that could be secured from the inside.

They quickly moved inside the cage. Laura used a heavy iron crowbar she found on the floor to jam the locking mechanism, creating a makeshift fortress within the decaying mill.

Emma huddled in the corner, her lips blue from the freezing rain. Laura wrapped her daughter in the thermal blanket, rubbing her arms vigorously to generate heat. The fourteen-year-old was incredibly brave, refusing to cry, but the trauma of being hunted was clearly taking a massive toll on her psyche.

Marissa knelt beside Laura, her expression grim. She confessed that she had managed to grab a single compact pistol from a fallen FBI agent during the bunker breach, but it only had six rounds left in the magazine.

Six bullets against a team of highly trained, heavily armed cartel assassins was a mathematical death sentence.

Laura looked around the rusted maintenance cage, her eyes locking onto a shelf filled with decaying chemical solvents, highly flammable industrial lubricants, and old propane torches. A dangerous, desperate idea began to form in her mind.

If they could not win a conventional gunfight, they would have to turn the entire logging mill into a lethal booby trap.

Laura shared her plan with Marissa and Emma. They did not have the luxury of fear; they only had the brutal necessity of survival. Emma volunteered to help, her previous athletic training giving her the agility needed to climb the rusted machinery and rig the traps from above.

For the next hour, the three women worked in absolute, focused silence. They poured slick industrial grease across the main concrete walkways. They rigged heavy, swinging iron chains above the entryways, held back by thin wires that would trip at the slightest tension. Finally, Laura carefully arranged the highly flammable solvents near the loading bay, creating a massive, volatile explosive hazard.

Just as Laura finished tying the final tripwire, the distant sound of heavy tactical boots crunching on wet gravel echoed from outside the mill.

The hunters had arrived.

Laura ushered Emma back into the steel maintenance cage, handing her the heavy iron crowbar for protection. Marissa took a position behind a massive steel pillar, raising her pistol and aiming it directly at the loading bay doors.

Laura stood in the shadows near the chemical trap, holding a lit flare she had found in an emergency kit. She was no longer just a terrified mother running from a nightmare. She was the nightmare waiting in the dark.
