Chapter 12 - The Black Site

The drive into the rugged Oregon mountains was an agonizing test of Laura’s nerves. Rain began to fall in heavy, blinding sheets, turning the winding logging roads into treacherous rivers of mud. Every pair of headlights that appeared in her rearview mirror sent a spike of pure terror straight through her heart.
After an hour of white-knuckle driving, Laura finally spotted the flashing red and blue lights of an armored FBI tactical vehicle blocking a narrow bridge. Director Miller stood in the pouring rain, holding a heavy assault rifle and signaling for Laura to pull over.
Laura slammed the SUV into park and pulled Emma into a tight, desperate embrace before rolling down the window. Director Miller quickly approached the vehicle, his face grim and soaked with cold rain. He ordered them to leave everything in the SUV and get into the back of the armored transport immediately.
As soon as they were secured inside the heavy steel cabin, the FBI driver threw the transport into reverse, navigating the massive vehicle up a hidden, unpaved mountain trail.
Miller sat across from Laura and Emma, his expression grave. He explained that Jason’s arrest had indeed crippled the cartel, but it had also created a massive power vacuum. A highly specialized, ruthless faction known as the Syndicate had violently taken over the remnants of the organization.
The Syndicate was not interested in drug trafficking or smuggling; they were corporate assassins and data brokers. They wanted the encrypted offshore account ledgers that Agent Vance had failed to retrieve. Because Laura and Emma were the last people in the hospital room with Vance, the Syndicate believed Laura had secretly copied the data before the FBI secured the microchip.
Laura vehemently denied knowing anything about a data copy. She swore she only cared about saving her daughter's life that night. Director Miller nodded slowly, believing her, but he warned that the Syndicate would not accept the truth. They operated on absolute paranoia and extreme violence.
The armored transport finally rolled to a halt in front of a massive, heavily fortified concrete bunker built directly into the side of a granite cliff. It was a decommissioned Cold War communications relay station that the FBI now used as a ghost site for high-value witnesses.
The heavy steel blast doors groaned open, revealing a stark, brightly lit interior swarming with heavily armed federal agents. A familiar face stepped out from the crowd of tactical gear, bringing an instant wave of relief to Laura’s chest.
It was Dr. Marissa Doyle. She had been relocated here by the FBI the moment the threat was detected. Marissa rushed forward and hugged Laura and Emma fiercely.

Director Miller assured them that this bunker was the most secure location in the Pacific Northwest. The walls were reinforced concrete, the air was scrubbed, and the communications were entirely analog to prevent outside hacking.
For a brief moment, standing in the impenetrable fortress surrounded by federal agents, Laura actually believed they were safe. But then, the bright fluorescent lights overhead flickered violently and died, plunging the entire underground bunker into absolute, terrifying darkness.
