Chapter 2 - The Surgical Discovery
The ambulance screeched to a halt outside the emergency room doors.
Paramedics threw open the back doors and rushed Emma's stretcher into the brightly lit trauma bay.
Laura tried to run in after them, but a pair of strong arms suddenly grabbed her waist from behind.
It was Jason, wearing a perfectly pressed suit and smelling of expensive cologne.
His grip was painful as he yanked her away from the sliding glass doors.
"You need to calm down and let the doctors do their jobs," he whispered aggressively into her ear.
Laura shoved him away with all the strength she could muster.
"Get away from me, you monster," she screamed, drawing the attention of several nurses.
Jason immediately changed his demeanor, holding his hands up and looking at the staff with a pitiful expression.
"My wife is just in shock, please excuse her," he lied smoothly to the security guard walking over.
Before Jason could drag her to the waiting room, Dr. Doyle stepped out of the trauma bay.
The doctor glared at Jason with a look of absolute disgust.
"Security, keep that man away from my patient and her mother," Dr. Doyle ordered sharply.
The guards stepped between Jason and Laura, allowing the terrified mother to follow the doctor.
They rushed to the surgical observation deck where a trauma surgeon was already making an incision on Emma's abdomen.
Laura held her breath as she watched the monitors beep rapidly in the operating room.
Blood filled the surgical field, but the surgeon quickly clamped the ruptured blood vessels.
Using a pair of long forceps, the surgeon reached deep into Emma's stomach lining.
He carefully extracted a small, cylindrical object covered in blood and stomach acid.
It dropped into a metal surgical basin with a heavy, sickening clink.
Dr. Doyle zoomed in the observation camera to get a better look at the foreign object.
It was not a piece of swallowed jewelry or a household item.
It was a military-grade titanium capsule designed to be completely waterproof and indestructible.
A federal agent in a dark suit suddenly stepped into the observation room behind Laura.

"We have been tracking that exact capsule for six months," the agent said coldly.
"And your husband is going to kill everyone in this hospital to get it back."
