Chapter 1 - The Ambulance Ride

The wail of the ambulance siren shattered the quiet afternoon as it sped toward Boise General Hospital.

Laura gripped her daughter’s cold, clammy hand, her own heart hammering against her ribs.

Emma lay on the stretcher, her eyes rolling back as a paramedic desperately adjusted her oxygen mask.

The teenager was slipping in and out of consciousness, muttering incomprehensible words in her agony.

Dr. Marissa Doyle had insisted on riding along, her face a mask of fierce determination.

Usually, urgent care doctors handed patients off to EMS, but Marissa refused to leave this girl’s side.

Laura looked at the doctor, tears blurring her vision as she begged for answers.

She felt entirely helpless watching the paramedics hang a second bag of IV fluids.

"Please tell me what you saw on that ultrasound screen," Laura pleaded.

"You said she needed advanced care, but you never told me the diagnosis."

Dr. Doyle checked Emma’s fading pulse before looking Laura directly in the eyes.

"Your daughter has massive internal bleeding, but it is not from an illness," the doctor stated firmly.

"The ultrasound showed a severe laceration in her stomach lining."

"It is being caused by a jagged, foreign metal object that is tearing her apart from the inside."

Laura gasped, clutching her chest as if she had been physically struck.

She could not comprehend how a dangerous piece of metal could be inside her fourteen-year-old child.

"She spent the entire weekend at the cabin with Jason," Laura whispered, her mind racing through the timeline.

"My husband dropped her off and told me she just had a bad case of food poisoning."

Dr. Doyle’s expression hardened as she pulled out her stethoscope.

"That is exactly why I called Child Protective Services before we even left the clinic."

"A child does not accidentally ingest an object of this size and shape."

"Someone forced her to swallow it, Laura."

The horrifying implication hung in the tight space of the ambulance, suffocating Laura with absolute terror.

Jason had always been a strict stepfather, but she never imagined he was capable of monstrous violence.

He had rushed away from the clinic parking lot so fast, claiming he had an urgent business meeting.

Now, everything about his hasty departure screamed of guilt and evasion.

Laura felt a sickening wave of nausea wash over her as she realized she had left Emma alone with a monster.

Suddenly, Laura’s cell phone buzzed violently in her purse, startling the paramedic.

She pulled it out and saw Jason’s name flashing brightly on the cracked screen.

With a trembling finger, she answered the call and cautiously brought the speaker to her ear.

"Laura, I am waiting for you at the emergency room entrance," Jason said, his voice eerily calm and calculated.

"But you should know that I brought a few friends with me, and they are making sure nobody gets inside to see Emma but me."
