Chapter 8 - The Cyber Heist

The bright blue security prompt blinked aggressively on my screen, completely mocking my desperate attempt to destroy the Vanguard empire.

There was only one surviving founding board member of Vanguard Corporate Acquisitions still residing within the city limits of Chicago.

Her name was Evelyn Vance, a wealthy, reclusive socialite who had famously orchestrated my father's tragic downfall twelve years ago.

She lived in a heavily guarded, absolute fortress of a penthouse located entirely at the top of the towering Vanguard Spire.

I strapped a concealed, highly compact pistol to my ankle and slipped out into the freezing, chaotic night entirely unseen.

I knew Evelyn’s elite security detail would completely annihilate me if I tried to simply walk through the front lobby doors.

I used the black ledger to locate a deeply hidden, structural vulnerability in the skyscraper’s massive, external window-washing elevator system.

I climbed the freezing metal scaffolding on the exterior of the towering building, the harsh wind violently tearing at my dark clothes.

My hands went entirely numb as I ascended eighty terrifying floors, completely suspended over the glittering, massive expanse of the sleeping city.

I finally reached the expansive, glass-enclosed balcony of Evelyn’s luxurious penthouse and smoothly bypassed the electronic sliding door lock.

I stepped quietly into the opulent, dimly lit living room, my wet shoes leaving faint, dark footprints on the priceless white carpet.

Evelyn was sitting calmly in a massive leather armchair by the fireplace, drinking an expensive glass of dark red wine.

She did not look surprised, panicked, or even slightly alarmed when she saw me standing there with my dripping, chaotic hair.

"You look exactly like your father when he was young, angry, and entirely desperate," Evelyn noted with a soft, weary sigh.

I pulled the concealed pistol from my ankle holster and aimed it directly, unwaveringly at the center of her chest.

"I need your retinal scan to completely drain Richard Vanguard’s offshore accounts, and I am not leaving here without it," I demanded coldly.

Evelyn took a slow, elegant sip of her wine and gently set the crystal glass down on the marble side table.

"I have spent twelve agonizing years heavily regretting the cowardly role I played in your brilliant father's absolute destruction," she confessed quietly.

She stood up slowly, completely ignoring the heavy, lethal weapon pointed directly at her heart.

"I will gladly give you the scan and burn their entire empire to ashes, but you must promise me absolute immunity from the fallout," she negotiated smoothly.

I lowered the weapon slightly, nodding my head in a tense, completely reluctant agreement to her desperate, final terms.

I pulled out my specialized, encrypted tablet and quickly held the glowing blue retinal scanner directly up to her tired, aging eyes.

The scanner beeped cheerfully, officially authorizing the catastrophic, multi-billion dollar financial transfer.

I watched in absolute, profound satisfaction as the digital numbers plummeted rapidly to zero, entirely vaporizing the Vanguard family's massive wealth in seconds.

Suddenly, the heavy mahogany doors of the penthouse burst violently open with a deafening, terrifying crash.

Chelsea Vanguard stood entirely unhinged in the doorway, her hair completely wild and her eyes burning with pure, psychopathic fury.

She was holding a massive, terrifyingly sharp hunting knife, completely abandoning any remaining pretense of her polished, corporate elegance.

"You took absolutely everything from me, and now I am going to carve your heart completely out of your chest!" Chelsea screamed hysterically.
