Chapter 5 - The Medical Vault

Grant frantically nodded his head, his entire body trembling violently as he knelt in the damp concrete dust.

The royal guards quickly hauled him to his feet, keeping their heavy, calloused hands firmly clamped securely on his expensive suit jacket.

"The medical supply vault is heavily protected by a dual-biometric scanner that requires a retinal scan from an active surgeon," Grant stuttered nervously.

"That is exactly why the Sheikh paid a small fortune to have you temporarily smuggled out of federal prison tonight," I replied coldly.

We left the unconscious corporate fixers tied securely to the electrical pipes and moved rapidly up the hidden maintenance staircase.

The hospital corridors above us were completely silent, heavily patrolled by Chelsea's newly hired, highly aggressive private security team.

We slipped quietly through the shadows of the basement level, expertly avoiding the glowing red lenses of the rotating security cameras.

We finally reached the massive, reinforced titanium door of the central medical supply vault located deep beneath the pharmacy.

I shoved Grant roughly toward the glowing biometric scanner mounted securely on the cold concrete wall.

"Open the door right now, and absolutely do not try anything stupid," I warned him, keeping my voice dropped to a dangerous whisper.

Grant leaned forward, his hands shaking so badly he could barely keep his bloodshot eye completely open for the bright blue laser.

The machine beeped cheerfully, and the heavy titanium door slowly slid completely open with a soft, pressurized hiss.

I stepped quickly into the freezing vault, surrounded entirely by millions of dollars worth of rare medications and surgical equipment.

I frantically searched the metal shelving units until I found the highly specialized, custom-ordered cardiac valves intended for the Mayor's surgery.

I pulled the sterile plastic packaging into the light and immediately saw the tiny, almost invisible puncture marks on the protective seals.

Chelsea had absolutely laced the delicate surgical valves with a highly lethal, untraceable neurotoxin.

"She really was going to intentionally murder the Mayor on live television to destroy this hospital," Grant whispered in sheer, unadulterated horror.

I turned around to hand the tampered evidence directly to the royal guards standing watch by the heavy door.

The guards were entirely gone, completely vanishing into thin air without making a single, detectable sound.

Instead, Chelsea Reeves stepped smoothly out from behind a towering shelf of surgical masks, holding a heavily suppressed pistol aimed directly at my chest.

She was wearing a stunning, blood-red designer dress that looked incredibly out of place in the freezing, sterile medical vault.

"Your royal friends were highly motivated to leave when I wired fifty million dollars into their offshore accounts ten minutes ago," Chelsea smiled wickedly.

Grant instinctively took a massive step backward, cowardly attempting to hide his large frame entirely behind my back.

"You cannot possibly get away with murdering us in the middle of a fully operational hospital," I stated with absolute, unwavering calm.

Chelsea laughed, a completely unhinged and deeply terrifying sound that echoed harshly off the metal shelves.

"I already brutally murdered the Chief of Surgery in this exact room yesterday afternoon when he discovered my little plan," she confessed proudly.

"The police are currently looking for Grant regarding that murder, which means I can easily claim I shot you both in heroic self-defense," she explained.

She cocked the heavy pistol, the metallic click echoing loudly like a deadly, final judge's gavel in the freezing room.

"Before you die, Mara, I want you to know that stealing your husband was the most boring, tedious part of this entire glorious operation," Chelsea sneered.

Grant let out a pathetic, high-pitched whimper, completely shattering the illusion of the strong, confident surgeon I had once married.

"You really should have learned to thoroughly check the ventilation systems before cornering your enemies, Chelsea," I whispered dangerously.

I reached directly behind my back and aggressively pulled the heavy, emergency chemical-release handle mounted secretly on the shelving unit.
