Chapter 14 - The Devil's Bargain

The deafening, rhythmic chopping of heavy helicopter blades violently vibrated through the concrete ceiling of the sub-basement.

Omar had not bothered sending corporate lawyers or disguised fixers to quietly negotiate a peaceful surrender.

He had brought a literal, heavily armed private army to completely annihilate the hospital and seize the biological weapon by brute force.

"We have exactly five minutes before his strike team breaches the elevators and begins slaughtering your staff," Julian stated with terrifying, clinical calmness.

I looked at Jax, who was already racking the heavy slide of his tactical rifle, completely ready to die defending this facility.

I looked back at Julian, entirely recognizing the bitter, absolute necessity of a temporary, unholy alliance.

"If you try to steal the formula for yourself, Julian, I will gladly put a bullet through your skull," I threatened with a fierce, unwavering glare.

Julian smiled darkly, offering me a quick, mockingly respectful bow.

"I would expect absolutely nothing less from the formidable Mara Hart," he replied smoothly.

"Where exactly did your father hide the vault?" he asked, instantly shifting into absolute combat mode.

I bypassed the ruined server room and led them rapidly down a narrow, forgotten maintenance corridor hidden behind the industrial laundry machines.

We arrived at a massive, completely rusted iron door that looked entirely like an old, decommissioned boiler room entrance.

"My father built the true laboratory directly inside the original foundation of the building, entirely off the official city grid," I explained, pulling a heavy brass key from my necklace.

I inserted the key and violently twisted the heavy iron wheel, breaking the fifty-year-old seal with a loud, metallic groan.

The door swung open, completely revealing a pristine, high-tech, glass-enclosed biological laboratory hidden inside the dark concrete cavern.

The sheer contrast between the rusted exterior and the brilliant, sterile interior was absolutely breathtaking and deeply terrifying.

In the absolute center of the room sat a massive, temperature-controlled titanium safe bearing the chilling, engraved hazard symbol for a Level 4 biological agent.

"The Phoenix Vault," Julian whispered in genuine awe, stepping slowly into the brilliantly lit laboratory.

"It requires a dual-authorization sequence. My biometric signature and a manual, sixty-character decryption code," I stated, walking directly to the central terminal.

Suddenly, a massive, deafening explosion violently shook the entire foundation of the hospital, raining thick concrete dust from the ceiling.

Omar’s heavily armed tactical mercenaries had successfully breached the sub-basement and were actively blasting their way through the security barricades.

"Open the vault right now, Mara!" Julian shouted, drawing two heavily customized, suppressed pistols from his tactical holsters.

I placed my hand aggressively onto the glowing blue biometric scanner and rapidly typed my father’s highly classified decryption code into the keyboard.

The heavy titanium safe hissed violently, venting a thick cloud of freezing, liquid nitrogen vapor into the sterile room.

The thick metal doors slowly slid apart, revealing a single, glowing vial of shimmering, bright silver liquid suspended in a magnetic field.

Project Genesis was not a massive weapon; it was a devastatingly elegant, highly concentrated neurotoxin beautiful enough to paralyze the world.

Julian reached fiercely for the glowing vial, but I aggressively slammed the heavy, protective glass lid completely down over the container.

"I hold the weapon, Julian. You hold the door," I commanded with absolute, undisputed authority.

Before Julian could argue, the heavy iron door of the boiler room was violently blown completely off its rusted hinges.

Omar’s elite death squad poured rapidly into the cavern, their heavy laser sights instantly painting our chests completely red.
