Chapter 2 - The Wooden Box

I sat entirely alone in a dimly lit, heavily secured penthouse located on the absolute opposite side of the city.

The scratched wooden box with the broken brass latch rested quietly on the glass dining table in front of me.

I did not care about the federal agents swarming my hospital, nor did I care about Grant's pathetic, public downfall.

I slowly reached out and popped the broken brass latch, letting the heavy wooden lid creak backward.

Inside the velvet-lined box lay a single, heavy black ledger and a highly encrypted flash drive.

My father had entrusted me with these items on his deathbed, warning me that the hospital was built on top of a highly dangerous corporate graveyard.

I plugged the encrypted flash drive directly into my secure laptop and typed in a sixty-character passcode that only I knew.

A terrifying digital blueprint of Harbor Grace Medical Center instantly populated across my glowing computer screen.

I initiated a protocol my father had named the Phoenix Directive.

With a single keystroke, I completely wiped every administrative server, bank account, and patient scheduling system within the hospital's mainframe.

If Chelsea Reeves truly believed she could simply steal my family's legacy with a forged signature, she was about to learn a devastating lesson.

Back at the hospital, Chelsea marched proudly into the executive suite, ready to claim her newly stolen throne.

She confidently logged into the primary financial terminal to verify the massive transfer of the hospital's liquid assets.

A glaring red error message flashed aggressively across the screen, indicating that the multi-billion dollar accounts had been entirely drained to zero.

Chelsea shrieked in absolute fury, violently swiping a heavy computer monitor directly off the mahogany desk.

Grant was currently sitting in a temporary holding cell downtown, desperately begging his expensive lawyers to fix his ruined life.

He had absolutely no idea that the manslaughter charges were completely fabricated by Chelsea to keep him out of her way.

I opened the black ledger and traced my finger down a long list of powerful names my father had meticulously documented.

I stopped at the name Richard Vanguard, a ruthless corporate raider who had famously vowed to destroy my father twenty years ago.

Chelsea was not just an ambitious nurse looking for a rich, gullible surgeon to manipulate.

She was Richard Vanguard's youngest daughter, and this entire affair had been a heavily funded, multi-year corporate espionage operation.

My phone suddenly buzzed on the glass table, vibrating violently against the thick wood of the box.

I answered the encrypted call, fully expecting to hear the smooth, reassuring voice of Sheikh Omar Al-Rashid.

Instead, a heavily synthesized, robotic voice echoed chillingly through the small speaker.

"You are incredibly smart to wipe the servers, Mara, but you forgot to check your own blind spots," the voice mocked lightly.

I stood up quickly, my heart hammering violently against my ribs as I scanned the empty penthouse.

"Who is this, and how did you get this highly restricted number?" I demanded fiercely.

"I am the person who just locked the electronic deadbolts on your penthouse doors from the outside," the voice replied.

I rushed to the heavy mahogany front door and pulled aggressively on the handle, but it was entirely fused shut by the electronic lock.

"Phase one is completely finished, and now it is time for you to burn with your father's miserable secrets," the voice whispered.

Thick, highly toxic black smoke began pouring rapidly through the ceiling ventilation grates above my head.
