Chapter 13 - The Subterranean Ghost

Julian Vance did not look like a grieving, heartbroken son mourning the tragic loss of his billionaire mother.

He looked exactly like a highly trained, completely unhinged apex predator who had just cornered his prey in a locked cage.

Jax instantly raised his heavy tactical pistol and aimed the glowing red laser sight directly at the center of Julian’s chest.

"Take one more step, and I will permanently mount your head on the lobby wall," Jax threatened with a fierce, lethal growl.

Julian did not even flinch, completely ignoring the deadly weapon pointed squarely at his heart.

He casually raised his right hand, revealing a small, metallic detonator switch with a bright green LED light.

"I have strapped highly concentrated C4 explosives to the primary oxygen lines running directly into the intensive care unit above us," Julian announced smoothly.

"If your loyal guard pulls that trigger, my thumb slips, and two hundred innocent patients will instantly vaporize in a beautiful ball of fire."

My heart completely stopped in my chest as the sheer, terrifying magnitude of his ruthless leverage washed over me.

"Stand down, Jax," I ordered firmly, pushing the barrel of his heavy pistol completely toward the floor.

Julian smiled a cold, victorious smile and slowly placed the metallic detonator safely back into his tactical pocket.

"You are incredibly smart, Mara, which is exactly why I am offering you a very simple, non-negotiable partnership," Julian stated, stepping closer.

"I do not partner with psychotic terrorists who bomb hospitals," I replied, crossing my arms defensively over my chest.

"You partnered with Sheikh Omar, the exact man who brutally tortured my mother and forced your father to engineer a biological weapon," Julian fired back viciously.

The shocking revelation hit me like a massive, physical blow to the stomach, completely shattering my understanding of the past.

Omar had always claimed to be my father's greatest ally and financial protector against the Vanguard family.

"Omar is a high-level international arms dealer, Mara. He completely fabricated the royal billionaire persona to launder his blood money," Julian explained rapidly.

"He used Evelyn and Richard Vanguard to bankrupt your father, entirely forcing him to develop Project Genesis in exchange for your life."

I stared at Julian in absolute, unfiltered horror as the twisted, blood-soaked puzzle finally snapped completely into place.

My entire life, my vast corporate empire, and my family’s pristine legacy were built entirely on a foundation of horrific, global terrorism.

"What exactly do you want from me, Julian?" I whispered, my voice completely devoid of its usual, commanding authority.

"I want the true, original formula for Project Genesis hidden in this hospital, and then I want to use it to completely liquidate Omar’s entire organization," he demanded.

He was offering me a chance to permanently destroy the monster who had enslaved my father, but the price was surrendering a weapon of mass destruction.

"If I give you the formula, you will undoubtedly use it to kill thousands of innocent people," I argued fiercely.

Julian stepped incredibly close to me, his dark eyes burning with absolute, unrelenting vengeance.

"If you do not give me the formula, Omar’s mercenaries will breach this hospital by dawn, and they will absolutely leave no survivors," Julian warned quietly.

Before I could answer his terrifying ultimatum, my emergency pager vibrated violently against my hip.

It was a highly classified, priority-one alert from the hospital’s rooftop security outpost.
