Chapter 5 - The Trap is Sprung

The massive steel door sealed completely, plunging the underground vault into absolute darkness.

Panic gripped my throat as I frantically felt along the cold metal walls for a light switch.

"Hello!" I screamed, banging my fists against the immovable door.

The only response was the dull, mocking echo of my own voice.

Suddenly, a harsh, fluorescent security light flickered on above my head.

A small speaker crackled to life in the corner of the ceiling.

"Did you really think my father was the only powerful man I had in my pocket, Clara?" Sienna's voice echoed through the vault.

I stared up at the security camera mounted in the corner, realizing she had been tracking me.

"Let me out of here, Sienna, or I swear I will destroy you," I yelled at the lens.

"You have absolutely nothing, Clara," she laughed cruelly.

"The bank manager is a very close friend of Marcus, and he is going to leave you down there until Monday morning."

She explained that by the time the bank opened after the weekend, my charity's money would be completely untraceable.

The speaker clicked off, leaving me entirely alone in the freezing, suffocating room.

I forced myself to take a deep breath and calm my racing heart.

I turned back to the open metal box and pulled out the heavy black ledger.

I flipped through the pages under the dim security light.

It was a master record of every illegal bribe, payoff, and offshore account Julian's family had ever created.

It was enough evidence to send Marcus and Julian to federal prison for the rest of their lives.

But the evidence was completely useless if I was locked in a tomb.

I looked down at the loaded silver revolver resting in the velvet box.

I picked it up, realizing my father-in-law had left it for self-defense, but I had a different idea.

I aimed the barrel directly at the electronic locking mechanism of the massive steel door.

I turned my face away, covered my ears, and pulled the trigger.

The gunshot was deafening in the enclosed space, echoing like a bomb blast.

Smoke filled the small room, burning my eyes and lungs.

When the smoke finally cleared, I saw that the bullet had completely shattered the electronic keypad.

The heavy steel locking bolts groaned loudly, and the massive door slowly swung outward by a few inches.

I squeezed through the gap and sprinted up the spiral staircase, clutching the black ledger tightly against my chest.

I burst into the main lobby, only to find the bank manager standing there with three armed security guards waiting for me.
