Chapter 11 - The Silver Box

The sound of the crashing ocean waves suddenly faded into a deafening, terrifying silence.
I stared at the tiny baby shoes resting innocently in the silver box, feeling a violent wave of nausea wash over me.
The handwritten note on the prison stationery felt incredibly heavy, burning my fingers with its toxic revelation.
"Check the baby's DNA again—he belongs to your new lawyer."
The words echoed in my mind, a cruel, mocking promise from a woman sitting in a federal cell.
Elias walked out onto the wooden porch, holding two mugs of freshly brewed coffee and smiling warmly at the sunrise.
He saw the pale, horrified expression on my face and immediately set the mugs down on the small table.
"Clara, what is wrong?" he asked, his voice laced with genuine concern as he rushed to my side.
I slowly handed him the prison note, completely unable to find the words to explain the absolute nightmare unfolding in my hands.
Elias read the note, his jaw clenching so tightly that a muscle feathered in his cheek.
He looked down at the tiny baby shoes, and all the warm color completely drained from his handsome face.
"This is a lie," Elias stated firmly, his voice shaking with a sudden, intense fury.
"Sienna is a convicted sociopath, Clara. She is just trying to destroy our happiness from behind bars."
I wanted to believe him more than anything in the world, but the nagging seed of doubt had already been planted.
"Sienna framed you for insider trading five years ago, Elias," I whispered, looking directly into his eyes.
"Is there any possible way you were involved with her again before she married Julian?"
Elias stepped back, looking genuinely hurt by my accusation.
"Absolutely not," he vowed, his eyes flashing with a desperate sincerity.
"I have not spoken to that monster since the day she ruined my career."
I looked back at the note, realizing that Sienna's father had been a powerful federal judge.
He could have easily falsified the DNA records during the divorce proceedings to hide the true paternity of the child.
If the baby truly belonged to Elias, it meant Marcus was not the father either.
It meant Sienna had played every single man in her life like a master puppeteer.
"We need to know the truth, Elias," I said, my voice steadying as the shock slowly wore off.
"If that child is yours, we cannot just ignore it."
Elias ran a hand through his hair, looking out at the vast ocean with a heavy, troubled sigh.
"I will call my private investigator," he agreed softly.
"We will get a sample of the baby's DNA and run a quiet, independent test."
I nodded, feeling a small measure of comfort in his immediate willingness to face the terrible situation head-on.
But as Elias turned to walk back inside the house, I noticed a tiny detail on the silver box that made my blood run cold.

The return address label was not stamped with the federal prison's official seal.
It was stamped with the logo of Elias's private law firm.
