Chapter 12 - The Phantom File

The realization that the box had been sent from Elias's own firm sent a violent chill straight down my spine.

I quickly slipped the silver box beneath the morning newspaper before Elias returned to the porch.

I needed undeniable proof before I confronted the man who had just saved my life a year ago.

I told Elias I had a headache and needed to rest, urging him to go to his office and handle the DNA investigator.

As soon as his black SUV pulled out of the driveway, I rushed to his home office and locked the heavy wooden door.

Elias was a brilliant defense attorney, which meant his home network was incredibly secure.

But I had spent seven years running a multi-million dollar charity, dealing with aggressive corporate auditors.

I knew exactly where wealthy men hid their most sensitive digital skeletons.

I booted up his desktop computer and bypassed his primary password using the birthdate of his late mother, a detail he had shared during an intimate dinner.

I navigated past his legitimate case files and opened a hidden, encrypted folder labeled 'Contingency.'

My heart hammered against my ribs as I scrolled through hundreds of meticulously organized documents.

There were detailed surveillance photos of Julian, Marcus, and Sienna dating back nearly three years.

Elias had been tracking their every move long before he miraculously swooped in to save me at the bank.

Then, I found a subfolder titled 'The Heir.'

I clicked it open, and the breath completely left my lungs.

It contained a highly classified, heavily redacted medical file from Dr. Vance's clinic.

The file confirmed that Elias had indeed visited the clinic precisely nine months before Sienna's baby was born.

But the most horrifying document was a signed, legal contract between Elias and Sienna's late father, the corrupt federal judge.

The contract clearly outlined a massive, multi-million dollar payout in exchange for Sienna's guaranteed silence regarding the child's true paternity.

Elias had not been framed for insider trading five years ago.

He had willingly taken the fall to protect the judge, and in return, the judge had promised him complete immunity when he finally destroyed Julian's family.

I sat back in the leather chair, feeling the entire room spin violently out of control.

Elias had orchestrated the entire downfall of the Vance family, using me and my charity as the perfect, innocent bait.

Suddenly, the heavy wooden door of the office rattled loudly.

"Clara, are you in there?" Elias called out, his voice smooth and terrifyingly calm.

"I forgot my briefcase."
