Chapter 4 - The Hidden Vault

Dr. Vance guided me away from the sobbing Julian and into his private office.

He locked the heavy wooden door behind us and closed the window blinds.

My hands were shaking as I sat down in the leather guest chair.

"What could you possibly have that changes the fact that Marcus just stole fifty million dollars?" I asked.

Dr. Vance sat behind his desk and opened a small, velvet-lined box.

Inside rested a heavy, antique brass key engraved with a serial number.

"Before Julian's father passed away, he knew his sons were greedy and ruthless," Dr. Vance explained quietly.

"He also knew that you were the only decent person to ever join their family."

I stared at the key, memories of my late father-in-law flooding back.

He had always supported my charity work, secretly funding my first three shelters.

"He left a private safe deposit box at the First National Bank under your maiden name," Dr. Vance continued.

"He told me to give you this key only if Julian ever betrayed you."

A spark of genuine hope finally ignited in my chest.

If the old man had left me a contingency plan, it had to be powerful enough to stop Marcus.

"Why didn't you give this to me a year ago during the divorce?" I asked, feeling a brief flash of anger.

Dr. Vance looked down at his desk, genuine shame washing over his face.

"Sienna's father is a federal judge, Clara," he confessed in a strained whisper.

"He threatened to revoke my medical license and destroy my clinic if I didn't verify the fake fertility results."

I realized the conspiracy went far deeper than a simple cheating husband.

"I am only helping you now because the judge passed away last week," Dr. Vance admitted.

I took the cold brass key, feeling the weight of a billion-dollar empire resting in my palm.

"I am going to the bank right now," I declared, standing up with renewed determination.

I rushed out of the hospital and hailed a taxi, heading straight for the financial district.

I walked into the massive marble lobby of First National Bank and presented my identification to the vault manager.

He led me down a spiral staircase into the silent, heavily fortified underground vault.

I found the box matching the serial number and turned the heavy brass key in the lock.

Inside the metal drawer sat a single, black leather ledger and a loaded silver revolver.

Before I could reach for the book, the heavy steel vault door slammed shut behind me with a terrifying mechanical click.
