Chapter 16 - The Ghost of the Past

Julian stood perfectly still in the dim lighting of the parking garage, looking completely different from the broken man I had left in the hospital.
He was not wearing the cheap, ill-fitting clothes of a disgraced, bankrupt executive.
He wore an incredibly expensive, custom-tailored Italian suit, and his posture radiated a terrifying, newly found confidence.
"You are supposed to be in a federal penitentiary," I stammered, instinctively taking a step backward toward the safety of the elevator.
Julian smiled, a cold, calculating expression that reminded me entirely too much of his treacherous older brother, Marcus.
"The federal appeals process is a wonderful thing, Clara, especially when you have highly motivated, incredibly wealthy friends on the outside," Julian replied smoothly.
"Elias Thorne made a fatal mistake when he orchestrated his master plan."
Julian slowly walked closer, his expensive leather shoes echoing loudly against the concrete floor.
"He completely underestimated how much the old guard of the financial district despised his sudden, aggressive rise to power."
He explained that a powerful syndicate of corrupt investors, men who had previously operated in the shadows of the Vance empire, had quietly pooled their vast resources.
They had aggressively funded Julian's legal appeal, completely discrediting the initial evidence Elias had so meticulously planted.
"They needed a public face to reclaim the lost Vance territories, and I was more than happy to oblige," Julian stated, stopping just a few feet away from me.
I gripped the handle of my purse tightly, feeling a sudden, terrifying surge of absolute dread.
"What do you want from me, Julian?" I demanded, keeping my voice as fierce and steady as possible.
"I don't have your money, and you have absolutely no legal claim to my foundation anymore."
Julian chuckled softly, reaching into his suit jacket pocket.
"I don't want your pathetic charity, Clara," he said, pulling out a thick, sealed legal document.
"I want the child."
I stared at him in utter, complete confusion.
"The baby belongs to Elias, Julian," I reminded him sharply.
"Sienna confessed everything in prison. You have absolutely zero biological connection to that child."
Julian's eyes darkened with a sudden, vicious flash of pure malice.
"Biology means absolutely nothing in a court of law when the legal paperwork is ironclad," he sneered.
He held up the legal document, tapping it firmly against his other hand.
"Sienna signed away her full parental rights to me yesterday afternoon in exchange for a drastically reduced prison sentence."
He smiled wickedly, relishing the sheer terror suddenly washing over my face.
"And since Elias is currently rotting in a maximum-security federal cell, I am officially and legally the sole guardian of the child."
"Why?" I asked, genuinely horrified by the twisted, impossible logic of his actions.

"Because," Julian whispered, leaning incredibly close to my face.
"That child is the only remaining legal heir to the entire Thorne family trust fund, which is currently worth over two hundred million dollars."
