Chapter 9 - MOVING ON

Six months passed. The drama of the wedding faded into a cautionary family legend.

Chloe moved into a small apartment on the outskirts of the city. We didn't speak. I heard through the grapevine that she was working two jobs to pay off the massive credit card debt Carter had secretly opened in her name during their brief engagement. She had tried to reach out to me once, sending a generic "I miss you" text, but I didn't reply. Forgiveness requires an apology, and Chloe was only sorry that she got caught.

My life, however, flourished. Without the constant financial drain and emotional manipulation of being Chloe's personal assistant, my own business took off.

And then, on a quiet Tuesday evening, Elias took me to the rooftop of our favorite downtown restaurant. The sun was setting, casting a golden hue over the city skyline.

He didn't make a big, dramatic spectacle. There were no hidden photographers, no forced aesthetics, and no demands. He just looked at me with tears in his eyes, pulled a velvet box from his pocket, and asked me to be his wife.

I said yes before he even finished the sentence.
