Chapter 3 - THE UNINVITED GUEST

I spent my afternoon swimming in crystal-clear waters, entirely unbothered. Meanwhile, in Texas, the wedding of the year was imploding.
I received a frantic text from my cousin, Sarah, who was sitting in the third row at the ceremony.
Sarah: OMG. Where are you? It’s a disaster. Chloe walked down the aisle crying, but not the happy kind. There are barely any flowers. And Carter looks like he’s going to throw up.
I didn't reply. I just watched the drama unfold through Sarah's play-by-play texts.
Sarah: Okay, they just finished the vows. We are at the reception now. Wait. Someone just walked in. She’s wearing a red dress. Chloe is screaming.
My jaw dropped. I called Sarah immediately. She answered from the bathroom, whispering frantically.
"It's Jessica," Sarah hissed into the phone. "Carter's ex! She literally walked into the reception during the first dance. Chloe stopped the music and started screaming at her to leave. But Jessica didn't even look at Chloe. She looked straight at Carter’s parents."
"What did she say?" I demanded, sitting up on my beach chair.

"She said she wasn't leaving until Carter gave her back the $20,000 he borrowed from her to pay for his half of this wedding. Clara, his family is supposedly loaded! Why is he borrowing money from his ex?"
Because it was all a lie. The entire aesthetic was a lie.
