Chapter 5 - THE AUDACITY

On Sunday morning, as I was enjoying a mimosa on my balcony overlooking the ocean, an unknown number called my phone.
I answered it. "Hello?"
"You owe me a honeymoon," Chloe’s voice came through the speaker, raspy and completely unhinged.
I almost choked on my orange juice. "Excuse me?"
"Carter’s credit cards are frozen. Jessica is threatening to sue him. My wedding was a complete humiliation, and it's your fault! If you had just paid the florist and showed up, the pictures would have looked fine!"
"Chloe, your new husband is a con artist who was sleeping with his ex-girlfriend. How is the florist the issue here?"
"I need your credit card number," she demanded, ignoring reality entirely. "We are supposed to fly to Greece tomorrow. The travel agent is going to cancel the flights if we don't pay the remaining balance. You owe me this for stealing Mom's hairpin and ruining my day."

"I don't owe you a dime," I said, my voice turning to steel. "I owed Mom the respect of not letting you wear her vintage heirloom while you disrespected her memory. Enjoy your new husband, Chloe."
I hung up and blocked that number, too.
