Chapter 8 - THE MECHANIC'S REVENGE

When I flew back to Austin five days later, Elias was waiting for me at the airport with a bouquet of real, beautiful wildflowers.
"Welcome back, troublemaker," he grinned, kissing me deeply.
"Did I miss anything else?" I asked, throwing my bags into the back of his truck.
"Just the finale," Elias laughed.
Carter, desperate for cash and facing a lawsuit from his ex-girlfriend, had tried to sell his supposedly "classic" vintage Porsche to pay off his debts. He brought it to the most reputable mechanic in the area for an appraisal to show buyers.
He brought it to Elias’s shop.
Elias, the "working-class" mechanic who wasn't good enough for Chloe's wedding photos, spent two hours inspecting the car.
"I handed him the report in front of the buyer he brought in," Elias told me as we drove home. "The car had a salvaged title. It had been flooded in a hurricane three years ago and illegally painted over. It was worth maybe three grand in scrap parts."

The buyer walked away. Carter threw a massive temper tantrum in the lobby, but Elias just smiled and handed him a bill for the inspection.
Three weeks later, Carter and Chloe filed for annulment. The money was gone, the illusion was shattered, and they absolutely despised each other.
