Chapter 2 - THE INSIDE MAN

I wasn't completely in the dark about what was happening in Austin. My fiancé, Elias, hadn't been invited, but his auto shop was right across the street from the luxury hotel where the reception was being held.

While I was checking into my beachfront suite, Elias called me.

"Babe, you are not going to believe the absolute circus happening across the street right now," Elias laughed, the sound of air tools whirring in the background.

"Tell me everything," I said, falling back onto the plush hotel bed.

"Well, first off, the florist actually left. I saw the vans pull away. Chloe’s bridesmaids were running around outside trying to buy out the local grocery store’s floral department. They were literally carrying plastic-wrapped carnations into a $50,000 venue."

I burst out laughing. Chloe’s obsession with a "high-end aesthetic" had been reduced to supermarket discounts because she refused to pay her own bills.

"But that's not the best part," Elias continued, his voice dropping low. "I was on my lunch break, grabbing a coffee next to the hotel patio. Carter was out there pacing, screaming on his phone. And babe... he wasn't talking to Chloe."

"Who was he talking to?"

"He said, and I quote: 'I told you not to show up today, Jessica. If my parents see you, the trust fund gets cut off.'"

Jessica. The ex-girlfriend. The one Chloe forced me to apologize for mentioning.
