Chapter 10 - THE PERFECT DAY

Our wedding was exactly what a wedding should be: a celebration of love, not a theatrical performance.
We didn't rent a $50,000 ballroom. We rented a beautiful, rustic botanical garden. There was no strict dress code. There were no six-page emails dictating how people should behave. Elias’s mechanic friends drank beer with my corporate colleagues, laughing and dancing under the stars.
Chloe was not invited. I didn't send a petty note; I just didn't send an invitation. Peace was my priority.
As I stood in the bridal suite looking in the mirror, my cousin Sarah stepped up behind me. She gently slid Mom’s vintage pearl hairpin into the side of my updo.
"She would be so proud of you, Clara," Sarah whispered, wiping a tear from her eye.
"I know she would," I smiled, touching the cool pearls.

I walked down the aisle to the sound of an acoustic guitar. When Elias saw me, he broke down crying, completely unbothered by who was watching. In my vows, I spoke about my mother. I spoke about the strength she taught me, the boundaries I had learned to set, and the profound, simple joy of finding a man who loved me exactly as I was.
There were no forced smiles that day. Only real ones. And when the photographer sent us the gallery weeks later, they were the most beautiful pictures I had ever seen.
