Chapter 4 - THE HOUSE OF CARDS

Carter’s family wasn't "traditional and conservative." They were broke and drowning in debt. They had convinced Chloe that Carter was a trust-fund baby, and Chloe, blinded by the idea of marrying into high society, never questioned it.

Carter had been stringing Jessica along for months, bleeding her savings dry to fund the illusion of wealth for Chloe's dream wedding, promising Jessica he would cancel the wedding at the last minute.

When Jessica realized he actually went through with the vows, she decided to burn the building down.

Sarah texted me an hour later with a video attachment.

In the video, the reception hall was in dead silence. Carter’s father was red in the face, shouting at Carter. Chloe was hyperventilating in a chair, her grocery-store bouquet crushed on the floor.

"You lied to me!" Chloe shrieked at Carter. "You said your parents were paying for the honeymoon! You said you bought the house in cash!"

"I maxed out three credit cards to pay for this venue, Chloe!" Carter yelled back, completely dropping his polished gentleman facade. "You didn't pay for anything! Your sister paid for half of it!"

It was the ultimate poetic justice. Chloe had treated everyone like peasants, only to discover she had married a complete fraud.
