Chapter 5 - The Sister-in-Law's Trap

The three men advanced on me, their expressions cold and completely professional.
I backed away quickly, scanning the dimly lit garage for any possible escape route.
"Maya, what are you doing?" I shouted, my voice echoing off the concrete walls.
Maya glared at me with a mixture of intense hatred and pathetic desperation.
"Kenneth promised me a completely new life, Sabrina," she spat bitterly.
"He said once your family was voted out, we would take the money and move to Europe."
"You honestly believe a man who lied to his wife for five years is going to keep a promise to you?" I asked mockingly.
Maya's face flushed with anger, and she signaled the men to move faster.
I turned and sprinted toward the narrow concrete stairwell at the far end of the garage.
My lungs burned as I threw open the heavy metal door and began climbing the stairs two at a time.
The men were close behind me, their heavy boots echoing loudly in the enclosed space.
I reached the street level and burst out into the cold, early morning air.
The sun was just beginning to rise over the Denver skyline, casting a pale light on the empty sidewalks.
I ran blindly down the alleyway, knocking over trash cans to slow my pursuers down.
Suddenly, a silver sedan skidded to a halt at the end of the alley, blocking my path entirely.
The passenger door flew open, and Justin yelled for me to get inside immediately.
I dove into the car, and Justin slammed his foot on the gas pedal before the door even closed.
We sped away down the main avenue, leaving Maya's hired thugs standing angrily in the street.
"How did they know where we were meeting?" I asked, gasping for air.
Justin gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were completely white.
"Maya was at the police station giving her statement when I left," Justin explained grimly.
"She must have placed a GPS tracker on my car while I was talking to the detectives."
I pulled the corporate files out of my bag and handed them to my brother.
"We don't have time to worry about Maya right now," I said urgently.
"The board meeting starts in exactly two hours."
Justin pulled his secure corporate token from his jacket pocket and handed it to me.
I plugged it into my laptop and connected to Vincent's secure server.
We needed to initiate the digital kill switch to freeze all of Kenneth's stolen assets.
A progress bar appeared on my screen, slowly crawling toward one hundred percent.
Suddenly, the screen flashed bright red, and a bold warning message popped up.
"Access Denied. Emergency Override Initiated by Chief Operating Officer."
Marcus had completely locked us out of the system from the inside.
My phone rang instantly, displaying an unknown caller ID.
I answered it, and Kenneth's smug, arrogant voice filled the speaker.

"It is officially over, Sabrina," Kenneth laughed cruelly.
"I just boarded my private jet, and I am taking the entire company treasury with me."
