Chapter 10 - The Unseen Mastermind

I picked up the envelope and locked the heavy deadbolt behind me.
There was no return address, no postage stamp, and no writing on the outside of the thick paper.
I walked into the living room and used a small silver letter opener to slice through the seal.
Inside the envelope was a single, crisp photograph and a folded piece of lined prison stationery.
I pulled the photograph out first, and my heart instantly skipped a beat.
It was a candid picture of Justin sitting at a local coffee shop, laughing with his beautiful new girlfriend, Elena.
However, the photograph was taken through the crosshairs of a high-powered sniper rifle scope.
My hands shook violently as I unfolded the handwritten letter accompanying the terrifying image.
The handwriting was erratic, jagged, and chillingly familiar.
I read the words, and the comfortable, safe world I had just rebuilt completely shattered around me.
"You thought Kenneth was smart enough to plan a corporate takeover on his own, Sabrina?" the letter mocked.
"He was just a greedy, desperate pawn who followed my instructions perfectly until he got caught."

"Enjoy your temporary victory at the company, because I am being released on parole next week."
"And I am coming back to finish the job my pathetic son Kenneth failed to do."
