Chapter 2 - The Midnight Intruder

I scrambled to my feet and shoved the documents back into my black leather tote bag.
The footsteps in the hallway were getting louder and faster.
I looked frantically around the office for a place to hide or a weapon to defend myself.
I grabbed a heavy bronze paperweight from the desk and slipped into the dark closet behind the door.
I held my breath and pulled my knees to my chest.
The office door swung open, and the beam of a tactical flashlight cut through the darkness.
A tall man dressed in dark clothing stepped into the room.
He walked directly to the wall and cursed out loud when he saw the empty, open safe.
He pulled a cell phone from his pocket and dialed a number.
The speakerphone was on, and the voice on the other end made my blood run completely cold.
It was Marcus, the Chief Operating Officer of my family's company and my father's most trusted friend.
"Did you get the files?" Marcus asked impatiently.
"The safe is completely empty," the intruder replied.
Marcus swore loudly through the phone speaker.
"Sabrina must have taken them after she left the hospital," Marcus growled.
"Find her and make sure those documents never see the light of day, no matter what it takes."
The intruder ended the call and pulled a silenced handgun from his jacket.
He began walking slowly toward the closet where I was hiding.
I squeezed my eyes shut and raised the bronze paperweight, preparing to fight for my life.
Just as his hand touched the closet doorknob, police sirens wailed loudly from the street outside.
The intruder froze, looked out the window, and sprinted out of the office toward the back stairs.
I waited until I heard the back door slam before I finally let out a gasp of air.
I crept out of the closet and looked out the window to see two police cruisers parked in my driveway.
Justin, my brother, was standing on the lawn pointing toward the house.
I ran downstairs and threw open the front door to meet him.
"Sabrina, are you okay?" Justin asked, pulling me into a tight hug.
May you like
"I called the police because Kenneth's lawyer just showed up at the hospital," Justin explained.
"Kenneth is claiming that you poisoned him and Maya, and the police are here to arrest you."
