Chapter 9 - The Final Stand

I froze completely on the metal catwalk, my rifle perfectly steady but completely useless.

David looked exactly the same as he did three years ago, except for a vicious scar across his cheek.

"Drop the weapon, Sarah, and come down here," David ordered coldly.

My heart shattered into a million pieces, realizing the man I mourned had betrayed us all.

I slung my rifle over my shoulder and slowly climbed down the rusted ladder.

I walked onto the factory floor, raising my empty hands in surrender.

Warren laughed triumphantly, stepping forward to gloat over my defeat.

"You thought you were so smart, hiding in my neighborhood," Warren sneered.

"David sold you out years ago to protect his own illegal weapons deals," Warren explained happily.

I looked at David, searching his eyes for any shred of the man I once loved.

There was absolutely nothing there but greed and cold cruelty.

"You faked your death to become a traitor," I said, my voice dripping with pure disgust.

Marcus stepped forward, his face twisted in a hateful, painful grimace.

He pulled a heavy revolver with his good hand and aimed it directly at my face.

"I told you I was going to send you to the hospital, you bitch," Marcus spat.

"Say goodbye to your mother, kid," David whispered cruelly to Lily.

I looked at my crying daughter and gave her a small, confident wink.

"Thunderbird," I said loudly and clearly.

It was the secret word I had taught Lily years ago.

She immediately dropped to the floor and covered her ears.

I kicked the small, hidden tripwire stretched across the concrete floor at my feet.

The massive propane tank I had rigged to the ceiling above them violently exploded.
