Chapter 8 - The Abandoned Mill

I tackled Lily back into the dense tree line just as bullets shredded the ground where we had stood.

The helicopter circled above, tearing the forest apart with heavy caliber fire.

"Run, Lily, run to the old buildings!" I screamed over the deafening noise.

We sprinted through the dark woods until we reached an abandoned industrial steel mill.

The massive, rusted structures provided perfect cover from the aerial assault.

We slipped through a broken window into the dark, cavernous factory floor.

The chopper hovered outside, shining a massive spotlight through the broken glass.

I knew Davies would send ground teams to finish the job.

I only had a few minutes to prepare a defense against heavily armed traitors.

"Hide inside this old boiler tank, Lily, and do not come out until I say the secret word," I told her.

She crawled into the rusted metal cylinder, completely terrified but incredibly brave.

I quickly gathered empty propane tanks, heavy chains, and industrial chemicals left behind in the mill.

I rigged crude but highly effective explosive traps at every entrance to the building.

I was practically invisible in the dark rafters, waiting for the assault to begin.

Suddenly, the heavy metal doors of the mill screeched open.

Warren Caldwell walked in, completely surrounded by twenty heavily armed mercenaries.

Marcus was walking beside him, his broken arm secured tightly in a white medical sling.

They were sweeping the factory floor, looking for any sign of me.

I aimed my rifle, preparing to take down Warren first to cut off the head of the snake.

Then, a cold, familiar voice echoed from the shadows below.

"Don't shoot, Sarah, or the little girl dies."

I looked down and saw a man dragging Lily violently out of the boiler tank by her hair.

It was David, my supposedly dead husband, holding a pistol to our daughter's head.
