Chapter 17 - Zero Sum Game

The calm, elegant atmosphere of the underground fortress instantly dissolved into absolute, chaotic panic.
I could hear the wealthy syndicate buyers screaming angrily as heavily armed guards rushed them toward the VIP panic rooms.
Dozens of tactical mercenaries began swarming the lower levels, their heavy boots echoing loudly against the concrete.
I stood firmly at the end of the long hallway, using a massive concrete pillar for structural cover.
The first wave of five guards turned the corner, their assault rifles raised and sweeping the area.
I stepped out from cover and unleashed a devastating, controlled burst of automatic fire.
Three men dropped instantly, their expensive tactical armor shredded by the high-velocity armor-piercing rounds.
The remaining two scrambled backward, firing blindly down the corridor to suppress my devastating advance.
Bullets chipped the concrete pillar beside my head, sending sharp, stinging fragments of stone into my cheek.
I pulled a flashbang grenade from my vest, yanked the metal pin, and bounced it perfectly around the corner.
The deafening explosion and blinding light instantly neutralized their desperate, uncoordinated suppression fire.
I rounded the corner rapidly and eliminated both disoriented guards with cold, calculated precision.
I checked my watch; there were only three minutes left until the C4 destroyed the server room entirely.
I needed to reach the primary elevator shaft before the blast compromised the structural integrity of the lower levels.
I sprinted past the luxury auction room, noticing the holographic projection of Lily's barcode flickering wildly.
Suddenly, a massive, heavily armored mercenary stepped directly into my path from a side corridor.
He was wielding a heavy squad automatic machine gun, completely blocking my only route to the exit.
I did not try to outshoot his superior firepower in the narrow, exposed hallway.
I dropped sharply into a low slide across the polished floor just as he squeezed his heavy trigger.
A terrifying stream of heavy caliber bullets tore through the air exactly where my chest had been a second before.
I aimed my rifle upward as I slid past his flank, firing continuously into the vulnerable gaps of his side armor.
He roared in sudden pain, dropping the heavy machine gun and collapsing heavily against the glass wall.
I scrambled back to my feet, my breathing heavy and ragged, but my focus remained completely unbroken.
I reached the heavy steel doors of the primary elevator and aggressively smashed the emergency call button.
The digital display showed the elevator car descending slowly from the upper residential floors.
I reloaded my rifle and turned around to face the hallway, waiting for the inevitable counterattack.
The timer on my wrist beeped loudly, indicating only sixty seconds remained until total detonation.

I heard the ominous sound of boots marching in perfect unison from both ends of the corridor.
I was completely surrounded, and the elevator was still ten floors away.
