Chapter 5 - Highway to Hell

I did not slam on the brakes.
I shifted the transmission into low gear and braced for impact.
My heavy steel bumper slammed violently into the side of the armored truck.
The grinding metal screeched in the alley, but my customized engine pushed forward.
We scraped past the truck, taking off the driver's side mirror completely.
I whipped the steering wheel hard, fishtailing out onto the main suburban road.
"Keep your head down, Lily!" I shouted as I accelerated toward the highway.
I looked in my rearview mirror and saw two of the black SUVs giving chase.
They were fast, but they did not know the streets like I did.
I swerved through traffic, running red lights and dodging civilian vehicles.
The mercenaries leaned out of their windows and opened fire with automatic weapons.
Bullets pinged harmlessly off my reinforced rear window and armored tailgate.
I took the highway on-ramp at eighty miles per hour.
We were gaining distance, and I finally felt a small sliver of hope.
Then, a loud, terrifying crack echoed across the highway.
It was not a machine gun.
It was a high-caliber sniper rifle firing from an overpass.
My front right tire exploded instantly, sending rubber flying across the lanes.
The steering wheel jerked violently out of my hands.
The SUV spun out of control, skidding sideways across three lanes of traffic.
We slammed heavily into the concrete median barrier.
The airbags deployed with a dusty punch to my face.
Smoke hissed from the crumpled hood of my vehicle.
I unbuckled my seatbelt and turned to check on my daughter.
Lily was crying, but she was securely strapped in and unhurt.
The two black SUVs screeched to a halt fifty yards behind us.
Armed men poured out, advancing slowly toward our wrecked car.
May you like
They thought we were trapped and helpless.
I kicked my shattered door open and grabbed my rifle.
