Chapter 11 - The Invisible Ink

I stared at the photograph until my vision completely blurred.
The barcode superimposed on the back of my daughter's neck made absolutely no sense.
I walked quietly into the bedroom where Lily was sound asleep under a thick quilt.
I gently brushed her soft blonde hair aside to inspect her delicate neck.
There was no barcode visible to the naked eye.
Her skin was completely flawless, innocent, and smooth.
I let out a heavy breath I did not realize I was holding.
Then, my deep military paranoia kicked in, overriding my temporary maternal relief.
David was a traitorous monster, but he was a meticulous and brilliant monster.
He would not leave a cryptic note about buyers just to play a meaningless psychological game.
I walked into the safehouse bathroom and grabbed a portable ultraviolet sterilization wand.
I returned to the dark bedroom and shined the purple UV light over Lily's sleeping form.
My blood instantly turned to absolute ice in my veins.
Beneath the intense purple glow, a complex, luminescent barcode was tattooed directly into her skin.
It was inked using a highly classified subcutaneous biometric dye.
This was not just a crude identification mark for underworld human traffickers.
This was a secure access key meant to be scanned by proprietary military hardware.
David had not just sold me out to protect his illegal weapons operations.
He had somehow turned our only daughter into a living, breathing commodity.
I heard the soft, deliberate crunch of sand outside the heavy, bulletproof living room window.
We were currently in an FBI black site that was supposed to be completely off the grid.
Only Colonel Hayes and his top-tier lieutenants knew our exact geographic coordinates.
I immediately turned off the UV wand and drew my suppressed pistol from my waistband.
I crept slowly toward the window and peered carefully through the tactical blinds.
Four men in dark, dripping wetsuits were emerging silently from the crashing ocean waves.
They were carrying silenced waterproof assault rifles and wearing advanced thermal imaging goggles.
The buyers had not waited for David to make his scheduled delivery.
They had bypassed the middlemen and come to collect their property themselves.
The safehouse was entirely compromised, and the federal government could not protect us anymore.
I walked over to the bed and gently shook my daughter awake.
"We are playing the escape game again, sweetie," I whispered softly into her ear.
Lily did not cry or panic this time.
She simply nodded with tired eyes and quickly slipped on her running shoes.

I realized my daughter was getting used to running for her life.
That realization filled me with a cold, terrifying rage that I planned to unleash on whoever was outside.
