Chapter 4 - The Tactical Retreat

I slapped a heavy magazine into the rifle and chambered a round.

Three mercenaries poured into my kitchen, expecting a terrified civilian.

I fired controlled, precise bursts, dropping all three men in less than two seconds.

Their bodies hit the tile floor before they even realized they were under attack.

I moved silently through the hallway, checking my corners like I had in Fallujah.

The house was completely surrounded now.

I could hear Warren shouting orders from the safety of the street.

I needed to get Lily out before they decided to simply burn the house down.

I ran down the stairs into the dark basement.

Lily was hiding inside the old laundry cabinet, exactly where I had taught her to go in an emergency.

"Mommy, I am scared," she whispered, her face covered in tears.

"I know, baby, but we are going to play our escape game now," I told her calmly.

I walked over to the heavy metal shelving unit holding winter storage boxes.

I pulled a hidden lever disguised as a loose bolt.

The entire shelving unit swung outward, revealing a dark, narrow concrete tunnel.

It was an old Prohibition-era escape route that I had secretly reinforced when we bought the house.

It led directly to the detached garage facing the back alley.

"Crawl through, Lily, and wait by the car," I instructed.

I heard heavy boots stomping on the floorboards directly above us.

They had breached the main floor and were sweeping the rooms.

I pulled a flashbang grenade from my tactical vest and pulled the pin.

I tossed it up the wooden basement stairs.

A blinding flash of white light and a deafening explosion rocked the house.

The men upstairs screamed in agony as their vision and hearing were temporarily destroyed.

I slipped into the tunnel and pulled the heavy shelving unit closed behind me.

We emerged into the garage exactly as the mercenaries began shooting up the basement.

I strapped Lily into the backseat of my old, reinforced SUV.

I hit the garage door opener and slammed my foot on the gas pedal.

The SUV smashed through the rising door and launched into the back alley.

A massive armored truck suddenly swerved into the alley, blocking our only exit.
