Chapter 18 - Sins of the Father

The elevator doors finally slid open with a soft, melodic ding that felt entirely out of place in a warzone.

I did not step inside to escape the encroaching squads of heavily armed guards.

I grabbed a high-explosive fragmentation grenade, pulled the pin, and tossed it into the center of the approaching left squad.

I immediately dove backward into the elevator car, slamming my bloody hand onto the topmost floor button.

The massive explosion ripped through the hallway just as the thick steel doors sealed completely shut.

The elevator violently lurched upward, shaking violently from the concussive force of the grenade blast.

Ten seconds later, the massive C4 charges I planted in the server room detonated with a catastrophic roar.

The entire mountain fortress shook as if a massive earthquake had struck the Swiss Alps.

The elevator lights flickered aggressively and died, leaving me in absolute, terrifying darkness as the car climbed.

The digital genetic data, the research, and the multi-billion dollar syndicate database were completely vaporized.

Lily was finally free from the digital shadow that had haunted her entire short life.

The elevator finally shuddered to a harsh halt at the very top of the mountain facility.

I forced the heavy metal doors apart with my bare hands, stepping out onto a luxurious, glass-walled helipad observation deck.

The freezing alpine wind whipped fiercely through the shattered glass panes of the destroyed lounge.

A sleek, black VIP helicopter was currently warming up on the snowy helipad outside.

Standing directly in front of the helicopter, completely unfazed by the destruction below, was General Thomas Davies.

He was the architect of the treason, the mastermind of Project Thunderbird, and the man who ordered my family destroyed.

He held a heavy, silver revolver casually in his right hand, aiming it perfectly at the center of my chest.

"You have been an incredibly stubborn problem, Major," Davies said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion.

"You sold out your country, your soldiers, and a little girl for money," I spat, gripping my empty rifle.

"I did it for the future of warfare, Sarah, but your narrow moral compass blinded you," Davies replied coldly.

He slowly cocked the hammer of the heavy revolver, clearly intending to end my life right there on the ice.

I did not raise my hands, and I absolutely did not surrender to a traitor.

I triggered the hidden micro-explosive embedded in the handle of my empty assault rifle and threw it directly at his face.

Davies fired the revolver wildly out of reflex as the rifle exploded loudly in the air between us.

The bullet grazed my shoulder, burning fiercely like a hot poker, but I did not stop my forward momentum.

I tackled the corrupt General violently onto the freezing, slippery surface of the snowy helipad.
