Chapter 7 - The Burn Notice

I stared at the glowing screen, completely unable to process the impossible truth.
The text message simply read: "Is the package secured yet?"
My dead husband was communicating with the mercenaries trying to kill me.
I shoved the phone into my pocket and scrambled back up the hill to Lily.
I needed emergency extraction and a secure location immediately.
I pulled my encrypted military radio from my tactical vest.
I dialed the private frequency of General Thomas Davies, my commanding officer and mentor.
"Valkyrie actual, this is Echo-Seven, I have a code red emergency," I whispered into the mic.
"Sarah, thank God," Davies replied, his voice filled with static.
"I need an extraction team, Warren Caldwell is running a cartel hit squad in my sector," I reported.
"Listen to me carefully, Sarah," Davies said slowly.
"Warren is part of a massive treason network stealing advanced military weaponry."
That explained why I had been assigned to live undercover in that specific neighborhood.
"I need a chopper at coordinates Alpha-Nine," I demanded urgently.
"I am sending the extraction bird right now, just hold your position," Davies promised.
Ten minutes later, the heavy thumping sound of helicopter rotors echoed above the trees.
A sleek, black Blackhawk helicopter hovered over the clearing near the highway.
I grabbed Lily's hand and stepped out into the open to signal the pilot.
The side door of the chopper slid open, revealing a heavy machine gun turret.
I expected to see friendly soldiers waving us aboard.
Instead, the gunner racked the bolt of the heavy weapon and aimed directly at us.
"I'm sorry, Sarah," General Davies's voice echoed over my earpiece.
May you like
"You were getting too close to the truth."
The machine gun erupted in a terrifying blaze of fire.
